Lady Tigers Squander Chances Against Concord

The Lady Tigers came back from an awful first set to win the next two, only to see things fall apart again in the Lady Minutemen’s 25-11, 21-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-8 win.
After a 45-minute post-match team meeting, Warsaw head coach Rick Ashmore called the first set “probably the worst set we’ve played all year.”
The middle two sets were as tightly contested as one would expect between a pair of one-loss-in-the-conference teams. Neither squad could put together a run of more than five consecutive points.
The turning point in the match may have been in the fourth set. Tied at 19, a kill attempt by Warsaw’s Hanna Leach appeared to have been tipped by a Concord player, but was ruled to be out. The Lady Tigers won just one more point in the set.
Trailing 6-2 in the fifth set, Warsaw had a dig go straight up, and come back to the floor between three players, none closer than five feet, which may have prompted the lengthy team meeting after the match.
Ashmore suggested that with the hoopla surrounding the breast cancer awareness and fundraiser, his young team wasn’t as focused as it needed to be.
“Our conversation with the team here was about that we need to take our opponents seriously,” he said.
“We had a tremendous ‘Think Pink’ night. The parents that put it together did a great thing. We even talked about it yesterday, with everything else going on around us, we as a team needed to be ready to go. That’s what we need to contribute to this (night).
“You don’t want to use it as a crutch, but yes, we are very young. We’re actually younger than our JV team. We just tell them to ask themselves, ‘Are we outworking every team that we’re playing?’ That’s the way we have to go. We have to learn how to bash through some barriers that have been in this program.”
Ashmore made a point to say he hadn’t given up on the season, and expects the team to play well heading into sectional play in a couple of weeks.
“I believe in the kids,” he said. “We did some things that worked very, very well tonight. Concord responded real well and made some nice adjustments. It’s a growing experience.”
Alexie Day had 19 kills, and Nikki Parrett had 14. Erin Peugh and the lone Lady Tiger senior, Brynn Durecki, had three aces to lead the team.
Warsaw (17-12, 5-2 in the NLC) will host Penn in a non-conference match Tuesday.
