PALM HARBOR, Fla. – Betty Jean Highley, 89, passed away peacefully Sept. 29, 2016, in Palm Harbor, where she retired 30 years ago with her husband of 67 years, Everett Highley.
She spent her life caring for others as an registered nurse, first in the military, then with Dr. Wymond B. Wilson in Mentone; Miller’s Merry Manor in Warsaw; as well as The Bowen Center. She later became a Realtor with Lucas Better Homes and Gardens, Warsaw.
She loved Honeymoon Island, Mahjong and a good bowl of soup. She was a strong, confident, compassionate woman who never lost her sense of humor.
She is survived by her husband, Everett; a brother, Phil (and spouse Shirley) Canaday, Marion; children: Jim (and spouse Brenda), Columbus, Ohio; Nancy (and spouse Chris), Columbia City; Jerry (and spouse Susie), McCordsville; and Jay (and spouse Mary), Fort Myers Beach. She was a loving grandmother to Paul, Clinton, Grant, Luke, Brett, Meg, Jenna (and spouse Asher), Eric and Jason. She was also blessed with three great-grandchildren – Cohen, Brooks and Lilly – with two more on the way.
The family would like to thank Dr. Patrick Cenelli for supporting her and staying true to her wishes, and those who cared for Betty in her final days at St. Mark’s Village and Mease Countryside Hospital.
She will be laid to rest in Marion, with a private Quaker burial.
