The budget hearing will give the public a chance to the ask questions or make comments about the $77,877,159 budget.
Brandon Penrod, chief financial officer for the school corporation, said the budget hasn’t changed that much since last year.
He said the advertised budget does include some small increases due to rising cost of doing business.
Once the public hearing is over, the budget is scheduled to be brought before the school board for approval during its Oct. 17 meeting.
After the board approves the budget, it will then be submitted to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance. Penrod said they almost always suggest cuts, but he doesn’t expect any cuts to programs. Penrod said they advertise a higher budget expecting the DLGF to trim the budget.
Penrod said they want to be transparent and “show we are good stewards of the taxpayer’s money.”
The budget is allocated in the following manner; $51,936,742 for the general fund; $1,7 million for the rainy day fund; $7.9 million for capital projects; $3.6 million for transportation and $820,00 for bus replacement.
After the budget meeting, the school board will hold a special board meeting to interview candidates for the vacancy created by outgoing school board President Jennifer Tandy. That meeting is set for 5:30 p.m.
