Warsaw Swimmers Edge Rival Wawasee

SYRACUSE – Event winners were split fairly evenly between the Warsaw and Wawasee swimmers, in both the boys and girls competitions, Saturday morning.
The difference in the two meets was the points from third-place finishers, and Warsaw got just enough.
The Lady Tigers won 96-89 over Wawasee, and the Warsaw boys won 95.5-89.5 in the Northern Lakes Conference opener for all four teams.
In the girls meet, Warsaw and Wawasee split the 12 events, with Brenna Morgan and Delaney Wihebrink winning twice each for the Lady Tigers. Wawasee’s Brady Robinson and Jared Krugman won twice each in the boys competition. But in both cases, Warsaw’s depth won the day.
“I told the kids before the meet that not many of the events will go one-two, but it’s who gets third. Who steps up and takes that spot. Those points mattered today,” Warsaw head coach Anthony DeBrota said. “There weren’t many events that were dominated by either team, our kids just stepped up and delivered when we needed to.”
Wawasee head coach Julie Robinson said she wasn’t concerned with the results in terms of place in the race as much as the elapsed time of each of her swimmers.
“I didn’t even ask what the score was until the meet was over with. I didn’t find out until after the meet was over with, I was more concerned with times today,” she said. “But, now the teaching point goes back to – like the boys by six points – take a look back and see where some points were lost. We need to get the kids that are B or C lane swimmers to understand that they are important, too. If they can edge someone out, that’s a two-point swing in a C lane. We can use that as a teaching point.”
Wawasee will host Elkhart Memorial in NLC?competition on Tuesday. Warsaw hosts NLC?foe NorthWood Thursday.
