Mangas, Tigers Too Much For Eagles
By Dale [email protected]
He had to have liked what he saw out of one of his prized recruits.
In a game that featured a battle of Indiana All-Star hopefuls, Indiana Wesleyan commit Kyle Mangas was 11 of 13 from the field, scored 26 points, dished out six assists and led the Class 4A No. 5 Warsaw Tigers to a 62-41 win over NCAA Division I Valparaiso University commit Parker Hazen and the Columbia City Eagles.
In two games this season, the 6-foot-3 Mangas has made 24 of 31 attempts from the field, scored 56 points and dished out 10 assists.
The Tigers won both games handily, and in both games Mangas played like the best player on the floor.
In Saturday's win, the fourth in a row over Columbia City and the 10th in the last 11 meetings, Mangas was 9 of 9 from the field in the first half and scored 21 points before the teams went to the locker room.
Hazen scored 10 points in the first half and was held scoreless in the third and fourth quarters, as he finished the game 3 of 11 from the field.
“That performance Kyle Mangas had in the first half ... Columbia City was playing pretty well, and Kyle Mangas almost single-handedly kept us in the game,” said Warsaw coach Doug Ogle. “He was 9 of 9 from the field and scored 21 points. I mean, that was a memorable first half. I thought it was special. I don't feel bad saying that. I think it's pretty accurate to say that was a special first half by Kyle.”
There were seven lead changes and one tie in Saturday's game – all in the first quarter.
The Tigers led 17-14 after one quarter of play, but used a 16-4 run in the second stanza and outscored the Eagles 45-27 over the final 24 minutes.
“He's a really good scorer,” Columbia City coach Brett Eberly said of Mangas. “You know he's a really good player, but he's a really good scorer. He's not just a shooter, so you can't just take one thing away. If you run him off the three-point line, then he goes by you and finishes at the rim. If you take away his dribble-drive, then all the sudden he's hitting pull-up jumpers and threes. And if you can do all those things and contain him, he's such a good offensive rebounder. When a player is multi-faceted like Mangas is, he's going to get his.”
Another signature part of Mangas' game is passing and his ability to include his teammates.
Junior Ross Johnson benefitted from that, as the 6-3 junior guard scored 14 points.
Senior Braxton Minix and junior Asher Blum scored seven points each, while seniors Jaceb Burish and Jeremy David scored six and two points, respectively, in the win.
“Minix and Burish made shots off of Mangas’ penetration, and Ross played more like how I envisioned him playing, being more aggressive offensively,” said Ogle.
Warsaw was 26 of 40 from the field overall, 2 of 10 from three-point range, and 8 of 11 at the free throw line.
Even after shooting just 20 percent from the arc, the Tigers finished the game shooting 65 percent overall.
Facing a Warsaw lineup loaded with length, Columbia City wasn’t so fortunate.
The Eagles were 14 of 37 overall, 5 of 23 from the arc, and 8 of 13 at the charity stripe.
Warsaw’s defense forced the 6-7 Hazen away from the basket, making him a jump shooter. Hazen made just 1 of 6 three-point attempts.
“They made him a jump shooter,” Eberly said of how Warsaw handled Hazen. “He can make jump shots, he just didn’t tonight. At the same time, he has to do a better job of figuring out ways to get touches other than just on the perimeter, whether it’s inside or drawing kicks. He has to be able to do things that are multi-faceted.”
Jordan Bechtold scored seven points for Columbia City, while Garrett Roehling and Mitchell Wilson chipped in with six each, and Noah Wigent finished with five.
On top of containing Hazen, the Tigers also outrebounded Columbia City 28-14, as the Eagles fell to 0-2 in Eberly’s first year at the helm of the program after stepping up from his longtime post as the JV coach.
Warsaw is in action twice on the road this weekend, traveling to Homestead and Huntington North Saturday.
