Be Honest, You're Not Surprised ND Is In Trouble Again

By Roger Grossman-

You really weren’t surprised to hear the news Tuesday that Notre Dame was in trouble with the NCAA again, were you?
I mean, Notre Dame went 12-0 and played for the National Championship in 2012, and then backed that up with a nine-win season in 2013. It’s Notre Dame, right? They can’t win like that without some hanky-panky going on. It IS Notre Dame!
The NCAA came down hard on the Irish Tuesday, calling for them to forfeit all 21 wins in 2012 and 2013 – including the 12 that got them into the BCS title game in Florida in January of 2013. The good news is they don’t lose scholarships and are still bowl-eligible in the future (stop giggling, it’s not funny).
As it turns out, with all credit to my good friend Chuck Freeby for saying it first, Notre Dame’s wins in 2012 were as phony as Manti Te’o’s girlfriend.
The bad news is this is more bad news for Brian Kelly and his coaching staff at a time when they can least afford it. With an awful season just about to end with a road trip to southern California, Kelly was really looking forward to getting on the recruiting trail and trying to find some new players to coach.
Tuesday’s news will not help.
Now Kelly has to explain himself and defend his program to his university and its fan base, neither of which have been too enamored with its 2016 edition. It furthers a fear when Kelly took over that the price of bringing a winning football team to South Bend would include cutting corners on academics and taking chances on risky kids in the classroom.
It makes you think: if the glory of 2012 and 2013 has vanished, what is left of the Brian Kelly Era of Notre Dame football? The record book says a 10-win season that ended with a blowout loss in the Fiesta Bowl last January and three 8-5 seasons.
Uhhhh, yeah.
So now what?
Is this it for Brian Kelly at Notre Dame?
If it is, who will be the next to say “I can win at Notre Dame under their high academic standards!” That same person is the kind of person who says they will marry someone and fix them afterward. It’s nice, but it rarely happens.
For Notre Dame fans, it’s another brick in the wall of isolation from its glorious past. It’s also another piece of evidence that suggests that Notre Dame football can no longer compete at the national level and continue to uphold its rigorous academic standards.
Sigh…
