MISHAWAKA — Warsaw put a premium on possessions and gutted out a 40-33 girls basketball victory Tuesday at state-ranked Penn.
The Lady Tigers (5-0) bested a Kingsmen squad rated No. 4 among all schools by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and No. 6 in Class 4A by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association by being patient with the ball and stopping the hosts in key spots.
“We gutted it out and are walking away with the win,” Warsaw coach Michelle Harter said. “That’s big for us.”
Each team committed just nine turnovers, including four apiece in the second half.
“The girls are taking care of the basketball and seeing the each possession matters,” Harter said. “The girls did a very nice job.”
Harter made an adjustment that helped propel the Tigers.
“When they switched to their zone, we called a timeout and we talked about how we were shooting too quick on our shots. (I told them) to be patient, get some ball reversals so we can get some attack and kick in and kick out.”
Warsaw found ways to slash to the basket or get some back-door layups against the zone.
“When teams are overplaying you, you need to look for that and not try to force the issue,” Harter said. “In the third quarter we built a little bit of a lead and did some nice things.”
On her way to a game-high 15 points, Dayton Groninger scored all nine points for the Lady Tigers in the first quarter.
“Dayton has been coming out and playing solid for us,” Harter said. “She got off to a hot start for us today. (Penn) started keying on her. The nice thing with Dayton is that she lets the game come to her. She didn’t try to force the issue. She was looking to pass the ball and attack when she had the opportunity. Kenzie Welk (10 points with a pair of 3-pointers) had another great game for us, stepping up there and hitting some shots.
“That’s what you want to have. When they take your leading scorer away, you have somebody else step up.”
Warsaw’s biggest lead in the first half came at 18-11. Page Desenberg tallied a team-best four points (one field goal and two free throws) during the period and the Tigers were up 18-13 at the break.
Lindsy Kline made two layups and two foul shots for six of Penn’s eight points in the second quarter and had eight of her team’s 13 at halftime to go with six rebounds.
Warsaw led 23-14 thanks to an off-the-glass 3-pointer by Welk.
The Lady Tigers were ahead by as many as 11 points in the third quarter at 29-18 and took a 29-22 lead into the fourth quarter.
An 8-0 Penn run that began in the third period helped the Kingsmen cut the deficit to 29-27.
Warsaw took a 31-27 advantage into the game’s last three minutes.
A 3-pointer by Kaylee Patton at the 2:30 mark pushed the margin to 34-27. Penn never got closer than six the rest of the way.
The Lady Tigers went 6 of 10 from the foul line in the last 1:05 of the game and 10 of 16 at the stripe for the game.
Warsaw used a match-up zone defense to hold Penn to 12-of-38 shooting from the floor, including 5 of 17 behind the 3-point arc.
“Our zone was extremely effective,” Harter said. “We pushed them out farther than they wanted to be  and didn’t allow them to get good looks at the 3-point line. Our hands were active in the passing lane, getting deflections.
“We got some big stops when we needed to.”
Kline (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Sara Doi (10 points with two 3-pointers) paced the attack for the Kingsmen (5-1).
Warsaw plays at Class 2A No. 1 Whitko Friday.
