Wawasee Girls Show Defensive Intensity In Loss At Westview

TOPEKA — Wawasee displayed plenty of intensity — especially on the defensive end of the court — in falling 37-36 in girls basketball Friday at Westview.
The visitors led 34-28 with 2:22 to play following a pair of free throws by Aubrey Schmeltz and were still up 36-31 with 30.2 seconds to go after Aubrey Kuhn made one free throw then saw Westview rally for a home victory.
Westview’s two 6-foot-1 players — Alex Burr and Ashya Klopfenstein — tallied a layup and two foul shots, respectively, to pull the home squad to within 36-35.
When Westview (1-1) face-guarded four players and forced Wawasee (0-3) into a turnover on an inbounds play from the home baseline with 3.2 seconds left, it set up the game-winner.
“I told Hannah (Haines) to throw the ball long, but I didn’t communicate well enough in my book about where I wanted to throw it,” first-year Wawasee coach Matt Carpenter said. “I didn’t remind them that we needed to send somebody long to touch it and make them have to bring it (from the back court) in three seconds.”
After the change in possession back to Westview, Burr passed the ball to Summer Konkle and she hit a 7-footer from the right wing just before the final buzzer.
“I’m proud of my girls and proud of our fight,” Carpenter said. “That loss is one me. That’s what I told (my players). I can shoulder that blame. I didn’t communicate as well as I should down the stretch. We’re going to live and learn as group here.”
Wawasee took its 32-26 lead with a layup by Schmeltz and two baskets by Casey Schroeder.
“She really stepped up and made some big buckets down the stretch,” Carpenter said. “The sky’s the limit for her.”
Carpenter noted that his team had to work for everything it got offensively going against Westview’s size.
“They had 6-1 and 6-1 and came with 5-10 off the bench,” Carpenter said after seeing his team led offensively by the 6-1 Schmeltz (11 points, including four in the fourth quarter). “For the most part, my girls executed the game plan and played well defensively. We were where we needed to be positioning-wise. There were a few letdowns here and there, which comes with the territory.
“We know we’re going to play hard and we’re going to play together and live with the mistakes because we are going to get better from those.”
Westview coach Randy Yoder was complimentary of Wawasee’s intensity.
“They do a good job of putting pressure on the basketball,” Yoder said. “That makes passing a challenge.”
On a night where Wawasee made 23 turnovers, Westview committed 22.
Wawasee, which trailed 8-0 and 13-4 in the first half, also got 10 points from Haines (all in the middle two quarters).
Led by Aubrey Kuhn and Hannah-Marie Lemle with six each and Haines with five, Wawasee enjoyed a 29-17 rebounding advantage.
Burr (8), Konkle (7) and Klopfenstein (6) were the top scorers for Westview.
