Groninger’s 31, Defense Take Lady Tigers To 58-46 Win

It’s be easy to look at Dayton Groninger’s 31 points and think that was the main reason Warsaw’s girls basketball team beat Huntington North 58-46 Friday night in the Tiger Den.
But that’s only half the story.
The Lady Vikings hit seven three-point shots in the first half, and scored 22 points in the second quarter to take a 31-28 halftime lead. Lady Tiger head coach Michelle Harter said her team made adjustments at halftime, and held Huntington North to 15 points after intermission.
“It’s a tremendous win and a great team effort tonight. It was night and day between our first half and our second half,” Harter said. “I have to really give the girls credit because they listened at halftime to the adjustments we needed to make.
“They came out and were much more aggressive, on-ball defense and getting in position, where they needed to be. They were hitting three-point shots in the first half against us, and we did a much better job of finding their shooters, running out on them and not allowing them to get off threes. I think in that second half they only hit one three on us.”
Harter wasn’t surprised by her team being able to turn up the defensive pressure on the Lady Vikings.
“Defense is something you can control every night. Your offense comes and goes, but defense is attitude, it’s effort and it’s heart,” she said. “And you have to give these kids credit. They bought in to what we want them to do, they continue to get better each and every game, getting their hands up, getting deflections.
“Rebounding is something we thought we’d struggle with this year, but the girls are listening to what we want them to do, and putting forth that effort, and it’s paying off. It helps create some easy offense for us.”
In the first half, Groninger had a trio of three-pointers of her own, finishing the first two quarters with 19 points. While only three Lady Tigers scored in the opening 16 minutes, Warsaw had much better balance in the second half, getting several easy baskets in transition.
“Dayton’s been playing tremendous for us these last three games, and she’s a young lady that continues to grow each and every game, and working hard in practice. But you have to give her teammates credit for pushing her in practice,”?Harter said. “They’re making her work toward some of her weaknesses, so she gets stronger. Because of the little things that they do on the floor, it opens Dayton up.
“When you have somebody who’s a scorer like that, it is a team effort. One person can’t do it all. And these girls are an unselfish team, and are happy for each other. And as a coach, that’s something you want to see.”
Her teammates were glad to see Groninger back after a rugged week health wise.
“Actually, it’s kind of ironic, because I’ve been feeling sick all week,” she said. “Sometimes you play your best games when your sick. I think after sitting at home all week, I was ready to come out and get ‘em.”
Page Desenberg finished with nine points for Warsaw, and Madi Graham hit a three on her way to eight points. The Lady Vikings were led in scoring by Kylie Kaylor, who had 15 points on 4-of 14 shooting, but all her made shots were threes, plus three free throws.
Warsaw improved to 3-0 on the season, and has a week off before hosting No. 4 (3A) Tippecanoe Valley in the Tiger Den Friday.
