WINONA LAKE – Grace College’s women’s basketball team nearly pulled off a massive comeback in the final minutes on Wednesday, ultimately falling 81-74 to Indiana Tech.
The Lady Lancers faced a 14-point deficit with four minutes to play, but a furious comeback bid almost flipped the game.
A 3-pointer from the Warriors’ Kendall Knapke gave Indiana Tech a 77-63 lead with 3:53 on the clock. But Grace refused to fade.
Darian Patton and Kelsie Peterson scored on back-to-back possessions. Then Vironnica Drake buried a 3-pointer and was fouled, completing the 4-point play to cut the gap to eight.
Grace forced a turnover, and Brooke Sugg promptly sank another triple to bring the Lady Lancers to within five with 1:21 remaining.
On Indiana Tech’s next possession, the Warriors grabbed three offensive rebounds to kill nearly a minute off the clock. When Grace eventually got the ball back, Drake’s 3-pointer was just off the mark, which would have made it a 2-point game.
The Warriors (5-0) secured the win with two free throws for the final scoreline.
Haley Richardson had a big night, finishing with 18 points on perfect 9-for-9 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals in 25 minutes before fouling out.
Sugg scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half and hit all three of her 3-point attempts after halftime.
Grace’s shooting woes plagued the hosts throughout the first half. The Lady Lancers struggled to shoot 33 percent from the floor, including 1 of 12 from beyond the arc.
Despite an off-shooting half, Grace still kept Indiana Tech within range thanks to its scrappy, fullcourt defense.
The Warriors held a slight 27-22 lead midway into the second quarter. But Grace’s offense hit a dry spell, producing just two points over the next four minutes. Indiana Tech took advantage to open up a 16-point advantage and go into the half ahead 45-30.
Richardson was active on both ends of the court in the first half, scoring a team-high eight points on perfect 4-for-4 shooting.
Early in the third quarter, the Lady Lancers faced a 17-point deficit at 54-37. But Grace bounced back with eight straight points—all scored by Richardson—to chop the Warriors’ cushion down to nine at 54-45.
The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, and Indiana Tech held a 60-50 lead going into the final quarter.
Grace opened the fourth quarter with two 3-pointers from Brooke Sugg and Kelsie Peterson, cutting the Warriors’ lead down to eight with 8:54 remaining.
The Warriors built their lead back up to 14 with less than four minutes to play before Grace’s dramatic late push.
Drake finished the game with 12 points and two steals, and Peterson had nine points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Darian Patton tallied eight points, six boards and three assists, and Rachel Montgomery added four points and five rebounds.
As a team, Grace outscored Indiana Tech 44-24 in the paint. The Warriors took advantage at the foul line, however, making more free throws (22) than Grace attempted (16).
The Lady Lancers end the week with a tournament at Goshen College. Grace will play Cincinnati Christian on Friday at 6 p.m. and Southeastern on Saturday at 1 p.m.
