On Feb. 26, 1933, he was born in Wabash to Arthur Henry and Lylia Mae Starbuck Tinkel. On Feb. 27, 1953, in Beckley, W.VA., he was united in marriage to Judy Elizabeth Foy, who survives in Warsaw. They were married 63 years.
He was a graduate of Akron High School, class of 1951, and received an associate degree from Great Commission Bible School, Anderson. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ashland (Ohio) College University and Seminary.
He held many pastorates, including Gatewood Brethren Church, Fayetteville, W.Va.; Brush Valley Brethren Church, Adrian, Pa.; Roanoke First Brethren Church; Warsaw First Brethren Church; New Paris First Brethren Church; Milford First Brethren Church; West Eel River Church of the Brethren; and he started Meadow Crest Brethren Church, Fort Wayne. These churches include six building programs, and he served on several district and denominational boards and committees.
He was a member of Oak Hill First Brethren Church and West Eel River Church of the Brethren.
He served in the Civil Air Patrol, United States Air Force Auxiliary, for 28 years with the rank of lieutenant colonel and chaplain; Indiana State Wing chaplain for eight years, of which he was also a CAP/USAF pilot for many years. He was a member of National Brethren Ministerial Association, Ashland, and an ordained pastor in the Brethren church for 42 years, retiring in 1995.
He also was a member of Kiwanis Club International, of which he was a former president and a member of the Warsaw club; former Civil Defense area safety director and volunteer fireman, in Oak Hill, W.Va.; and former co-president of the Parent-Teachers Association.
Also surviving are three daughters: Paula Elizabeth (and spouse Dan) Gray, Peru; Cheryl Lynn Kessler, Fort Wayne; and Deanna Kay Ladd (and spouse John) Richards, Warsaw; seven grandchildren: Nathan (and wife Stephanie), Brandon (and wife Maryann) and Colin (and wife Megan) Gray; Eric Kessler; Julie (and husband Austin) Kessler; Jason (and wife Jaime) Ladd; and Jennifer Ladd (and fiance Chad Dahm); 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Lee Tinkel.
He was preceded by his parents and a brother, Arthur Junior Tinkel.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor Mark Ray officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral chapel.
