The Lady Legends, missing three players from its preseason roster, wanted to play uptempo, but struggled mightly with ball control. They turned the ball over 25 times in the first half, and finished with 40 turnovers in the game, while taking 34 shots.
The Lady Wildcats, who cancelled their scrimmage last week due to the success of the Whitko volleyball team, finally had a chance to play against another school’s players. Head coach Brandon Bradley wasn’t sure what to expect going in to the game.
“With it being the first game out, and playing a chaotic opponent, it’s kind of hard to anticipate how things are really going to go. I thought we did some good things, and I also think we have a lot of things we need to work on,” he said.
The pace was something of an adjustment for the Lady Wildcats. Whitko continued to expand its lead all night, but ran into stretches where decisions were affected by fatigue, according to Bradley.
“There was a big stretch in the middle, late in the first quarter into the second, and again in the third quarter, we were allowing fatigue to affect us,” he said. “We talked about it several times and finally, toward the end of the third quarter and the first part of the fourth, when I left the starters in, I thought the effort improved. They listened, they picked it up, and they were more disciplined.
“We need to learn how to play through fatigue. Defensively we were standing up and resting a few seconds, and then getting beat. Offensively, we went from a lot of movement to standing and just moving the ball. We gotta have player movement. It wasn’t a lazy thing, but an adjustment thing.”
Whitko had four players score in double figures. Senior Brianna Cumberland hit a pair of three-pointers on her way to a game-high 19 points. Aly Reiff had 15 points, Haley Yohe came off the bench and hit six of seven shots from the field for 12 points, and her sister Hanna had 10 for the Lady Wildcats. Kennedy Krull led all players with 10 rebounds.
Whitko sent a total of 10 players into the game, and everyone either scored or pulled down at least one rebound.
While the Lady Wildcats were clearly more experienced than their guests, Bradley said there’s plenty of coaching material to be gleaned from the experience.
“We didn’t have a scrimmage this year, so this was the first time we’ve played someone else. So now we need to go back, look at some film, figure out where we can improve, and try to figure out how to beat Central Noble, ‘cause they’re going to be good,” he said.
“The good thing is that I can go home, look at the score and know we won by 49 points, and know we could have played a heck of a lot better. I guess that’s a good feeling.”
Central Noble, a potential sectional opponent, opens its season at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Whitko.
