He was born in Dayton on June 16, 1929, to David H. and Marie Cunningham Crouse. He married Jean Halderman of Wabash in 1962.
Dave’s love for others and content nature stayed with him for his whole life.
He was a descendant of pioneering families (Cunningham 1835 and Crouse 1840). He attended and played basketball at Dayton High School, graduated from Indiana University School of Business, then graduated from IU School of Law in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, then began to practice law with George Hanna.
In 1967, he became the prosecuting attorney, where he served for seven years. He was elected judge of Tippecanoe County Court in 1979, which was a job that he thoroughly enjoyed. He retired from full-time work in 1996. As a result of his dedication, wisdom and service, he received the Sagamore of the Wabash award upon his retirement. From 1997 until 2013, he continued his service as a senior judge in Indiana and enjoyed the variety of courts and cases during that time.
Dave had a strong servant heart and loved to serve his family. He enjoyed cooking, hunting and singing. He sang in the Covenant Presbyterian choir for many years. His friends and family savored his delicious gourmet dishes, and both Sue and Marilyn have some of his recipes on handwritten cards. He liked hunting mushrooms in the fall, cooking them once he arrived home, and going duck hunting with his brother-in-law.
He was a fourth-generation member of Masonic Lodge 103 in Dayton. He also joined in with all of the fun and creative ideas that Jean suggested. He always had a kind and supportive word for his wife, children and friends.
He never thought of himself; he was always focused on what others wanted. While in the hospital, he asked his visiting granddaughter if he could get her anything. Another granddaughter observed that whenever she was not included in the conversation he asked her questions or talked about topics that were interesting to her.
Recently, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. His family is thankful for the comfort and kindness that he shared during his life and is grateful that he is healed and whole in the arms of Jesus. His love, supportiveness and good nature will be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Ann Halderman Crouse; his two daughters, Susan (and spouse Paul) McAlinden, Austin, Texas, and Marilyn (and spouse Steve) Homme, Warsaw; and six grandchildren: Stephanie, David, Megan, Kathryn, Andrew and John.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Soller-Baker Funeral Chapel, 400 Twyckenham Blvd., Lafayette, IN 47909.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel.
