Zolman Etches Place In History
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
ELKHART -ÊIt's not very often that a girls basketball team plays a regular season game in front of a packed house.
Especially in Elkhart's famed North Side Gym.
Especially on a Saturday afternoon.
Especially when the game is supposed to be pretty one-sided.
But this Saturday afternoon was something special, and the nearly 5,000 fans in attendance at North Side Gym knew it.
So did the players on the court.
So when Shanna Zolman picked up a defensive steal at half court and started toward the basket with just under a minute left in the game, the crowd knew what was about to happen.
So did Shanna.
History was about to be made.
A smile crept across Shanna's face as she moved down the court with the ball. The crowd was on its feet, and the roar of applause was deafening as Shanna moved in under the basket and tossed in a layup with 40 ticks left on the clock.
It was Shanna's 50th point of the day and her 2,870th career point. That layup broke Seeger's Stephanie White-McCarty's mark of 2,869 career points set in 1995 and solidified Shanna's place in Indiana basketball history.
"When she made the steal, I knew it was coming," said father and coach Kem Zolman. "She got the steal, and she smiled. She doesn't ever know what she's got as far as scoring, but I think she knew right before."
"The crowd was cheering and cheering every time I got the ball," said Shanna, "so I kept thinking, 'OK, that's it'.
"But when I made the layup, I knew."
The clock stopped with 40 seconds left as Shanna jumped into the air, picked up the basketball ran to the stands to hand it to her mother, Lynette. She then hugged her mom and her grandma and ran to her boyfriend John Morningstar and jumped into his arms. She high-fived some of the fans on the sideline and ran back to her father and her teammates where she was greeted with hugs, smiles and a few tears.
"I keep saying over and over, it doesn't sink in," said Lynette. "What a ride. It's an honor, and we don't take that lightly."
Once things calmed a bit, IHSAA assistant commissioner Theresia Wynns presented Shanna with the game ball, and Shanna posed for photos with her parents.
Shanna took a seat on the bench after the presentation, and the last 40 seconds of the game were played.
After the game, the crowd moved to the floor and surrounded Shanna, her teammates and her family for a ceremony.
"I really didn't plan to break the record today," said Shanna. "I planned to do it Tuesday. I wanted to do it Tuesday when Josh (her brother) and Stephanie White-McCarty could be there. But to do it here at North Side Gym in front of all our fans was special.
"Josh really wanted to be here, but he had to work at Ball State. He called last night, but I was already in bed. But hopefully he'll be able to see more important things."
And Shanna was quick to give credit to those around her.
"This is accomplishment is a team accomplishment," said Shanna. "I give as much credit to my team as anyone.
"And I want to thank all of our fans. I can't believe what a great following we have. We have the best fans around. To be here surrounded by 5,000 fans, especially during a day game, it's an adrenaline rush."
Although she is proud to be in Indiana's record books, she has a much higher goal.
"It was never my goal to break the record," said Shanna. "My goal is to win a state championship."
Now that Zolman is the leading girls scorer in state history, people are already asking about the next level -Êtopping Damon Bailey for the top overall state scoring honor.
"I think it is within reach, depending on how far our team goes," Shanna said. "But I want to go to the regional and the semistate and the state championship more than I want to break Damon Bailey's scoring record."
After the excitement of Saturday's record-breaking performance, what did Shanna plan to do?
"I'll probably call (Tennessee) coach (Pat) Summitt," she said. "I think she'll be pleased."
But before that, Shanna had a prior commitment to fulfill. Along with the rest of her teammates, she had to work concessions at the boys game.

Wawasee Girls Roast Elkhart Memorial
By Jen Gibson, Times-Union Sports Editor
ELKHART -ÊThe score wasn't close, but it's a game that will be talked about for years to come.
Everyone knows the big story of Wawasee's 82-40 victory over Elkhart Memorial, the feat that will be most remembered, is Shanna Zolman's 50-point record-breaking game.
While Zolman's performance is one for the record books, the importance of another happening was overshadowed: The Warriors improved to 4-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference.
That means the Warriors cannot finish below .500 in the conference standings. With just three games left on the conference schedule (Plymouth, Concord and Northridge), Wawasee sits atop the NLC and holds its fate in its own hands.
Against Elkhart Memorial, the Warriors jumped out to a 22-7 advantage after the first quarter and coasted from there.
Zolman scored the first five points of the game and 12 of Wawasee's 22 first-quarter points.
The Warriors continued their assault through the rest of the half and took a 50-12 lead after the second quarter.
Zolman opened the second quarter the same way she opened the first -Êwith a three-pointer. Her hot streak continued through the quarter as she hit 5 of 5 shots from the field along with a free throw.
At the half, Zolman had already racked up 26 points.
After the half, the Crimson Chargers came out on a mission.
Heather Cook and Ashley Lovelady scored the first two baskets of the third quarter, making the score 50-18 in Wawasee's favor.
It looked as if Wawasee fans would have to wait until the next Warrior game for Zolman to break the record when Elkhart Memorial held her to just eight points in the third quarter.
However, the Warriors still held a 38-point lead going into the fourth.
The Chargers cut the lead to 32 early in the fourth frame.
But at the 6:03 mark, Zolman started to come back with renewed fire.
She hit two straight baskets to return the Warrior lead to 37.
From that point on, the game belonged to Zolman.
She scored 16 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting performance from the field and a 4-for-4 performance from the charity stripe.
In all, Zolman tallied 50 points, 17 rebounds and five steals. All totaled, she was 5 of 5 from the free throw line 19 of 23 from the field, including a 7-of-10 performance from behind the three-point arc.
"I'm lucky I guess," said Zolman. "Basketball comes to me instantly, but I work hard at it. I love working hard at it."
"I think she's glad to have it (breaking the scoring record) over with," said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman. "She had been on a hot streak, no doubt about it."
Meagan Wallen and Jessica Henderson tossed in nine points each, while Jocelyn Higginbotham added eight.
"I was extremely happy with our performance today," said Kem Zolman. "In the first half, the girls did a nice job of contributing and working together."
The win improves Wawasee's record to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in NLC play. Elkhart Memorial falls to 4-11 and 1-3 in the NLC.
The Warriors hit the court again Tuesday when they travel to South Whitley to play Whitko.

Wawasee Bounces Back With Win Over Manchester
By Mike Madison, Times-Union Sports Correspondent
SYRACUSE -ÊOn Friday night against Elkhart Memorial, Wawasee coach Phil Mishler was very disappointed in his team's start.
"Memorial came right out and took it to us," Mishler said.
Whatever talk Mishler had with his players must have worked, for Saturday night's game against Manchester showed a different effort from the Warriors.
The Warriors came out blistering the nets and along with a stifling defense took the Squires out of the game early.
Wawasee scored the game's first 18 points and took an early 18-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
While Manchester did in fact inch its way back into the game and draw to within eight at one point, the Warriors held on for a 51-37 win.
Wawasee's defense held the Squires scoreless until the 6:36 mark of the second quarter.
"We came out strong tonight," said Mishler. "We came out and executed and bounced right back from last night's loss. That's a credit to our team and we feel real good about that."
The 18-0 lead would in fact be Wawasee's largest, for the Squires then went on a mini-run of their own, scoring the first nine points of the second quarter.
It was about mid-way through the second quarter before a three-pointer from junior guard Steve Conrad ended Wawasee's scoring drought and gave it a 21-9 lead.
Manchester pulled back to within nine at 23-14 when a three at the buzzer by the Warrior's freshman point-guard Kory Lantz gave Wawasee a 26-14 at the break.
Manchester accomplished at least one thing it tried to do, and that was to hold down Wawasee's scoring leader, Clint Custer.
By sagging in on Custer, the Squires held him scoreless in the half. He had few touches on the ball and got off no shots.
In an effort to stop Custer inside, the Squires left the outside open and the Warriors took advantage of some hot shooting to jump out in front.
The Warriors hit 6 of 8 three-point attempts in the half with both Kory Lantz and Conrad finishing with three each.
"They hit the shots early," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert, "but a lot of those shots were totally uncontested. That's what is disappointing, it just shows you just aren't ready to play. The way we are struggling offensively we can't afford to do that to ourselves on the defensive end."
The second half seemed almost a complete reversal of the first as far as the Warrior offense was concerned.
Wawasee only attempted two three-point shots in the second half, compared to 12 in the first half.
While Wawasee's Custer didn't have a basket in the first half he was 4 of 7 in the second half, including a three. He was also 6 of 7 from the free throw line, finishing with a game-high 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Not far behind him was Conrad with 13 points, including an impressive 3 of 4 from three-point range.
The win takes the Warrior record to 6-6 overall. Wawasee plays at Plymouth Friday night
Manchester's two losses over the weekend take them to 6-5.
Mishler's thoughts on Plymouth were pretty simple, "Coach Edison does such a nice job year in and year out. They have excellent skills. No matter what it will be a tough ballgame."

Five Tiger Wrestlers Go Undefeated At CMA
By Jim Brenneman, Times-Union Sports Correspondent
CULVER -ÊCompeting at Culver Military Academy on Saturday, five Warsaw wrestlers went undefeated on the day, while as a team the Tigers went 2-2 in the super-dual format.
TEAM RESULTS
Against Logansport the team lost 37-33, a margin of just one match. Then the Tigers lined up a pair of wins, 69-12 over Culver Military and 63-18 over Knox. The contest with 15th-ranked Lake Central was not decided until the final match. After a win by Brandon Cordell, Warsaw was ahead 34-24, but the advantage quickly vanished as Lake Central brought three ranked individuals to the mat: Justin Mora (No. 11 at 145), Austin Torres (No. 11 at 150) and Michael Escobedo (No. 1 at 160). These three finished with a flurry of falls and Warsaw came out on the short end of a 42-34 final score.
WARSAW'S UNDEFEATED WRESTLERS
Five Tiger grapplers went through the day with no losses: Anthony Boley, Tanner Connealy, Kyle Boley, Brandon Cordell, and Adam Galvin.
Outstanding wrestler for Warsaw was sophomore Brandon Cordell (140 pounds), who pinned all four of his opponents. Cordell has been like a bronco, full of energy and motion. However, as the season has progressed his bursting action has become increasingly controlled, enabling him to get the job done with wins on the mat.
Cordell built a 7-0 lead over Logansport's Jailing Lin before quickly pinning him in the second period, at 2:17. Then Ridge Daves of CMA fell in 1:12 and Cordell next took out Ryan Sibo, a strong Knox senior, in 2:59. In just 1:02 he flattened Andy Janett of Lake Central.
Tanner Connealy also had four victories: a 5-4 decision, and two pins (4:51 and 3:35). Finally he faced Lake Central's Chris Costello and mounted a takedown attack for an 11-3 major decision.
Three other Tigers were also undefeated, each with three wins and an awarded forfeit. Anthony Boley (119) in a no-nonsense day, had three speedy pins, all in the first period (1:41, 0:18 and 0:39). Kyle Boley also had three short matches, including a 26-11 technical fall in just 2:06. In the first period, takedowns happened so quickly that the scorekeepers could not keep pace. Boley was officially awarded 12 takedowns in the first period, amassing a score of 24-11 and then took the win with a final takedown just six seconds into the second period. He had two additional pins (1:55 and 2:48).
At 171 Adam Galvin had three wins and no losses: two falls (2:58 and 2:42) along with a 4-3 decision.
OTHER WARSAW WINNERS
Matt Palladino (130) had two wins by fall (3:03 and 3:54) and two losses by decision. He was defeated 7-1 by Logansport senior Scott Wilkinson, but his loss to Lake Central's Luke Triveline was noteworthy as an outstanding performance. Triveline is ranked No. 16 in the state. Nevertheless, Palladino scrapped furiously through the entire match and Triveline could only grab a heel twice to score a pair of takedowns and narrowly win 4-2.
Jacob Boots (215) had two wins and one loss, both wins coming by fall (:29 and 3:29). Recording one win by fall were Thomas Balestri (145), Chris Riley (152), Tyler Miller (189), and David Ferguson (275).
Sophomore Troy Miller (160) never gave up in spite of three losses and tallied his varsity win. Accumulating takedowns and nearfalls against a stalling Knox opponent, the younger Miller was credited with a 10-0 major decision.
The two wins and two losses put the Tigers at 8-10 on the season. Warsaw's Northern Lakes Conference record remains at 1-5, with the final NLC match at home Tuesday against Concord.

Valley Girls End Rochester TRC Streak
Times-Union Staff Report
ROCHESTER - Led by three double-figure scorers, Tippecanoe Valley's varsity girls basketball team downed host and Three Rivers Conference rival Rochester 57-49 Saturday.
The eight-point win improves the Vikings to 14-2 overall and 4-1 in the TRC, while Rochester falls to 13-5 and 4-1. The conference loss was the first for Rochester in over three years, snapping a 25-game TRC win streak.
Sophomore Rebekah Parker scored 23 for Valley, while teammates Tabitha Pratt and Kathy Prater added 10 each. Sherise Denny scored seven and Abby Shafer five for the winners. Rochester's Courtney Felke, who scored seven of the Zebras' eight three-pointers, led all scorers with 28 points.
"This was a tremendous TRC game, a huge win to pull us into a 4-1 tie with Rochester," Valley coach Gary Teel said. "Our pressure defense got us a lead early and we maintained it throughout the game. Rochester is a very good team and made several runs at us with excellent shooting from Courtney Felke."
The Vikings host conference opponent Southwood Friday.
