Young's Deaf Ears

Editor, Times-Union:

This is the last time I will write in response to a letter by Mr. Buck Young. Mr. Young does not seem like someone who will be persuaded by fact, let alone listen to a viewpoint he disagrees with. I, quite frankly, have better things to do with my time than unceasingly write letters that fall on deaf ears.

If I read Mr. Young's letter correctly, he starts out by stating that Jesus came only to teach the Jews. I suggest Mr. Young read Acts 11:15-21 or Matthew 8:5-13.

The idea that Jews are Communists is a misconception held over from the 1930s. Most Jews wanted nothing to do with either Hitler or Stalin. However, since Hitler was intent on the destruction of the Jewish people, many of them viewed Stalin as the lesser of two evils. They hoped that Stalin might intervene and stop Hitler from genocide. Ironically, this led some to view the Jews as Communists, which in turn helped fuel Nazi propaganda.

Since Mr. Young seems to be throwing out stereotypes about the Jewish people, how about this stereotype: Jews are always bankers and financiers and only concerned about money. That doesn't make sense if all Jews are Communists, does it?

So why don't we stop using stereotypes and look at facts. Judaism, a religion focused on the worship of God, does not mix with Marxist Communism which calls for the dissolution of all religions. So how could someone be both Jewish and a Communist?

Mr. Young also writes that Karl Marx was Jewish, which is incorrect. Marx's father was Jewish, but converted to Lutheranism before Karl was born. Therefore, Karl Marx was raised in a Lutheran home.

Mr. Young says he respects journalism that reports facts. Yet he does not seem to understand that you cannot call journalism factual when it agrees with your viewpoints, and false when it disagrees with your viewpoints. Journalism is not "good" only when it agrees with you. Fact: The Holocaust happened, thereby making it a historical event. Historical events are allowed to be taught in school, no separation of church and state involved.

At the end of his last letter, Mr. Young states, "Believe what you want." This, unfortunately, is exactly what he will continue to do, and I find it sad that he has decided to blunder forward, misinformed and spiteful, instead of opening his eyes to knowledge and love. I, for one, wish the students of WCHS well, and I hope they can take away the lessons they should from the Holocaust: that we need to remember we are all human beings, all God's children, we all depend on each other, and we should strive to love one another as God has commanded. (By the way, that's Matthew 22:39, Mr. Young).
