YMCA's 'Bridal Boot Camp' Challenges Women

There are three local brides and three bridesmaids who are making that commitment by participating in Kosciusko Community YMCA's "Bridal Boot Camp."
All of the women exercise on a regular basis, but the boot camp will give them an opportunity to hold each other accountable and prepare them for upcoming weddings.[[In-content Ad]]The six-week 50-minute class began Saturday morning, and will continue Saturdays until Feb. 20 is from 8 to 8:50 a.m. The women paid a fee to participate in the boot camp.
Stacy Thomas, YMCA wellness director, came up with the idea for the class.
"New Year's is a common time for engagements, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for brides and bridesmaids to get ready for weddings," Thomas said.
Thomas said the YMCA plans to offer another bridal boot camp in the spring, but a date has not been set.
Virginia Adamson, YMCA aerobic fitness instructor, will lead the women. Adamson has been a fitness instructor and personal event trainer for more than 30 years. She has been an instructor at Bally's Total Fitness and Gold's Gym in Virginia Beach when she lived on the East Coast.
Besides serving as the YMCA's boot camp instructor, Adamson has served as a fitness instructor and personal event trainer at Kosciusko Community YMCA for the past 2-1/2 years.
Adamson said those in the boot camp will learn how to tone and sculpt their arms.
"Many brides and bridesmaids want to lose five to 10 pounds, so our number one goal will be to help them lose some weight," Adamson said.
Adamson said the triceps are the largest area on a woman where body fat is stored.
She said she hopes the women come away with wanting to exercise, and make it a lifetime commitment.
During the boot camp, the women use a high-step riser to tone the quads and waist, and use a body bar with weights for squats and lunges.
They also will use hand weights to tone their upper body, and abdomen balls for abdomen strengthening.
The class will concentrate on arm strengthening and getting a slim waist.
"One of the nicest gifts a bride can give her court is to encourage them to exercise together," Adamson said. "I know the workouts are exhausting, but for the women to come in at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning to exercise and have accountability for one another says a lot."
Sisters Susan Sherwin, 32, Larwill, and Christy Horn, 30, Warsaw, decided to participate in the boot camp together.
Sherwin is getting married in April, and Horn will be her sister's maid of honor.
Sherwin works at Zimmer, and saw the advertisement for the boot camp on a billboard in front of the YMCA. Sherwin currently exercises three times a week, and said she hopes to tone her body by participating in the boot camp.
Nikki Harris, 25, Warsaw, is getting married in May, and exercises seven days a week at Zimmer and at the YMCA.
Harris is a runner, and decided she wanted more variety in her exercise routine so she decided to enroll in the bridal boot camp.
Brooke Riddle, 24, Warsaw, will be a bridesmaid in two weddings this summer in June and August.
Riddle, a speech therapist at Syracuse Elementary School, was an athlete at Rochester High School where she was in cross country and was on the softball and basketball teams. She exercises four times a week at Kosciusko YMCA.
Riddle said she hopes to get a toned body and get advice on what she can do to improve her body image.
Ashley Davis, 24, Bourbon, and her friend Natasha Riewoldt, 26, Bourbon, are participating in the boot camp together.
Davis is a student at Indiana University South Bend and will graduate in May as a dental hygienist.
Riewoldt's sister, Brittney Riewoldt, is getting married in June and Davis and Riewoldt will be bridesmaids in the wedding.
Riewoldt, a fifth-grade teacher at Argos Elementary School, got engaged New Year's Eve and is not sure when she will get married, but hopes the boot camp will prepare her for when she does.
Davis and Riewoldt also are training to run in a mini marathon in Indianapolis this summer.
