During a Kosciusko Development Inc. meeting Wednesday, Steve Jungbauer, chief executive officer of the Warsaw YMCA, informed members of the organization's need for a new facility.

Jungbauer reported the current YMCA, 1401 E. Smith St., was not efficient in housing current membership capacities. The YMCA reports 7,600 members use the Smith Street building, which is only estimated to house 5,000.

After acquiring the old racquetball club on Ind. 15 North and receiving a donation of 10.8 adjacent acres from the previous owners, Jungbauer said the YMCA plans to expand by constructing a larger facility on the newly obtained land.

"We feel we can showcase a facility that attracts people to the community," Jungbauer said. "Warsaw has outgrown the current facility, and the new location would provide a more adequate building not only for Warsaw, but Leesburg and Milford as well."

If the YMCA does choose to expand to a larger facility, Jungbauer said the old building would remain open.

Jungbauer distributed information and assessment questionnaires to all KDI members, and encouraged community response and donation to help the YMCA achieve its relocation goals.

Economic Development Coordinator Kim Nance reported the need for a resolution to meet requirements for a $30,000 Community Development Action Grant. To be eligible for the CDAG, Nance said, $35,000 of KDI funds could be used to meet the matching funds required for the grant.

The board approved the resolution unanimously. KDI President Joy McCarthy-Sessing said six to eight letters of recommendation also needed to be acquired for the grant application.

McCarthy-Sessing informed the board of a Kosciusko County Manufacturer's Council meeting Sept. 21 in which she will inform attendants of tax abatement and its recent state changes.

The board also:

• Heard a report from Doug Baumgardner, of Mutual Federal Savings Bank, on analysis of Indiana's economic development budget.

• Heard a report from McCarthy-Sessing on the county's availability of fiber-optic cable, which she believes could be used to attract new businesses into Kosciusko.

• Held an executive session before ending the meeting. [[In-content Ad]]
