W's Still Elusive For Wawasee
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
At 0-16, the Warrior boys basketball team was starving for its first win against NLC foe NorthWood, but in the end, the Wawasee squad would leave the gym hungry once again as the Panthers were victorious 63-60.
The Panthers started the game with a spark as Nic Bradley netted a three-pointer to give NorthWood the first lead of the game, but Wawasee came back to take a 4-2 lead with 6:38 left in the first.
That would be the last time Wawasee would hold the lead as NorthWood scored two straight baskets to take the lead once again. At one point, NorthWood held a 15-8 lead, but the Warriors battled back in the final two minutes of the quarter to get within four, 19-15, going into the second.
The second frame started the same way the first ended, with NorthWood holding a small advantage and Wawasee fighting to take the lead.
With 4:44 left in the half, Brock Doty sank a three-pointer to give NorthWood a 26-19 lead, and just 10 seconds later netted another long ball after a Wawasee turnover to give the Panthers a 10-point advantage.
While Wawasee was scoreless for more than two minutes, NorthWood built a hefty 33-19 lead before Andrew Warner hit a free throw to break the Warrior scoring drought.
With 1:13 to play in the half, NorthWood held a 38-28 lead, but Jeremy High hit two shots from the charity stripe to narrow the margin to 38-30 at the halftime break.
The Warriors came out ready to play in the third as they outscored the Panthers 14-13 in the stanza to head for the final frame with a 51-44 score.
The excitement came to a head in the fourth quarter when R.J. Nethaway netted a two-point goal to get the quarter started, and Warner followed by hitting two free throws to cut the NorthWood lead to three, 51-48.
It remained a three-point game until Charlie Roeder netted five straight Panther points to rebuild NorthWood's lead to eight.
The Warriors did not crumble, however, and Wawasee came back to within three points, 60-57, with just over one minute to play.
With 30 seconds left in the game, Nethaway nailed a three-pointer to make the score 62-60 in NorthWood's favor.
The Panthers moved the ball down the court and tried to eat as much time off the clock as possible, but Roeder was fouled with 18 seconds remaining in regulation play. Roeder, who was 8 of 8 from the charity stripe to that point in the game, stepped to the free-throw line to shoot the double bonus. Roeder netted the first of the two shots, but the second bounced off the rim and into Warner's hands.
The Warriors moved the ball down the court, and High tossed up a desperation three that ricocheted off the rim and back into Wawasee hands. Chris Lambert got the ball and took a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded, but the ball did not sail through the net as Wawasee fans would have dreamed. The ball fell just short of the basket, and Wawasee lost its 17th game of the season, 63-60.
"We have nothing to hang our heads about after this game," said Wawasee coach Jerry Davis. "The guys played their hearts out."
"Wawasee is one of the most dangerous teams out there right now," said NorthWood coach Dan Gunn. "At 0-16, they come on the court loose and care-free. What have they got to lose?
"They played extremely well, and this was by no means an easy game. We are happy to walk out of here with a win.
"I would like to see Wawasee get a win, just not against us."
