Works Board OKs Police Grant Requests

The Warsaw Police Department is receiving a grant that will help it be better equipped to assist drivers involved in serious driving accidents.
The Warsaw Board of Public Works and Safety at its meeting Friday approved a grant that will provide funds for equipment, training and overtime for officers to investigate impaired driving, fatal or serious bodily injury crashes.
The WPD, as part of the Kosciusko County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, has been approved to receive a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant that began Oct. 1 and runs through Sept. 30. The federal grant monies are administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
The team has been awarded $82,324 for the project. The police department's portion of the project will be approximately $20,000.
The board also approved a request by the police department's victim assistance program to apply to the National Association of Victims of Crime Act Assistant Administrators for a grant. The $5,000 grant will allow the department to have flyers and handouts printed Aug. 22-28 to promote National Crime Victims' Rights Week.
The funding also will allow for a speaker on domestic violence and victimization, advertisements for National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the purchase of a PowerPoint presentation regarding child abuse prevention, and a video regarding teen relationships and preventing dating violence to offer to local schools.
The board also:
• Approved six supply bids for 2007, including limestone from Rock Industries, ready mix concrete for aggregate, flowable back material for aggregate, bituminous material and curb concrete from Phend and Brown and concrete for flatwork from C-Hawk Concrete Construction Inc.
• Approved a subordination of mortgage at 729 E. Main St. for an Owner-Occupied Rehab Loan. The home underwent rehab in 2002 for $4,919. The request that was approved was to refinance not to exceed $72,000. The home has been appraised for $76,000.
• Approved a contract for a new postage meter for the Warsaw Building and Planning Department with Pitney Bowes for $30 per month for the first 60 months.
• Approved a contract with Barker Archives for confidential shredding at $300. Barker Archives will pick up boxes for destruction from the city.
• Approved three contracts with ComforTemp Inc. for equipment maintenance and routine maintenance for 2007. The contracts include a $958.26 agreement for the fire department, a $544-a-year contract with the city, and a $1,342.08 contract for routine maintenance for 2007 for the police department.
• Approved a contract between Pro Air Inc. and the police department for 2006 service for the police department's dive air compressor for $610.
• Approved a contract for the police department with Frauhiger Realty LLC for a lease agreement at 500 E. Winona Avenue from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2007, for $550 per month.
• Approved two new hires including Kristina Smiley as a wastewater treament utility operator at $11.61 per hour and Danny Risner as a WWTU operator at $11.61 per hour. Also, Jeremy Williams salary as a probationary firefighter was set at $1,429.09 bi-weekly and Mark Howard's salary as a captain for the fire department was set at at $1,837.69 bi-weekly. Joe Cutler's wage as a laborer for the street department was set at $8 per hour.
• Approved a travel request for David Henderson, utility manager for the wastewater treatment plant, to travel to Kansas City for a factory visit.
• Approved a $1,987.95 contract with the city and Penguin Point Catering for a Christmas Luncheon for city employees to be held Dec. 19 at Center Lake Pavilion.
• Approved a contract for the city's Department of Public Works with VIM Recycling Inc. for $6,000 for grinding brush and stumps for the city.
• Approved a contract for 2007 memorandum of agreement between the city of Warsaw and Board of Public Works and Safety for a Warsaw Sewage Collection Office Engineering Building. The contractor will receive an annual sum not to exceed $7,725 payable bi-monthly provided at least 20 hours of services are performed.
• Approved the city donating $250 to become a member of the Encore Society of the Symphony of the Lakes.
• Approved the city financing a two-page ad in the 2007 Kosciusko County Visitors Bureau Vacation Planner for one-third billed in 2006 and two-thirds billed in 2007 totaling $2,312. [[In-content Ad]]
