WINONA LAKE - Women's basketball players competing in the National Christian College Athletic Association Women's Basketball tournament had the opportunity to give back off the court Wednesday.

There are eight teams participating in the tournament that begins today and continues through Saturday at the Orthopaedic Capital Center on Grace College campus.

The athletes participated in community service projects at eight locations.

Participants included Grace College at Jefferson Elementary School; Southwestern Assemblies of God University, Waxachachie, Texas, at Heartline Pregnancy Center; Bethel College, Mishawaka, at Grace Village; Trinity International University, Deerfield, Ill., at Miller's Merry Manor; Mid-American Christian University, Oklahoma City. Okla., at Winona Lake Grace Brethren; Emmanuel College, Franklin Springs, Ga., at Jefferson Elementary; Roberts Wesleyan College, Rochester, N.Y., at Salvation Army; and King College, Bristol, Tenn., at Cardinal Services.

Morgan Diantonio, a Grace College women's basketball player, volunteered with her team members to reshelve books at Jefferson Elementary.

"It is important to remember God gave us talents on the basketball court and gifts to serve others," Diantonio said.

Kalen Collins, a King College basketball player, made shamrocks with Cardinal Services clients.

"This is exciting to help out in the community and to meet the clients who have a sense of humor," Collins said.

Carlie Dunbar, a Bethel College basketball player, visited with Grace Retirement Village residents.

"This is a Christian tournament, and it is great to be able to share Jesus with the residents," Dunbar said.

Andria Harshman, Grace College assistant athletic director, organized the service projects.

Chad Briscoe, Grace College director of athletics, thanked the organizations who opened their doors to allow the tournament teams to give back to the community.

"We are thankful for the opportunity to continue to partner with our community during this prestigious event," Briscoe said. "At Grace College, part of our mission statement is to prepare our students for service."

Briscoe said partnering with the NCCAA gives the college an opportunity at a national level to prepare students for service.
