Wogomon informed Wawasee Athletic Director Steve Wiktorowski of his intention to resign Monday, then informed the team during a meeting this morning.
“He has verbally told us of his intention to leave, but there has been no formal resignation submitted,” Wiktorowski said. “He said that will be coming soon.”
In his six seasons at Wawasee, Wogomon compiled a 25-37 record.
His record may not be all that impressive, but when he took over the Wawasee program in 2007, he was handed the reins of a team with low numbers and experience.
After going 5-25 in his first three seasons, Wogomon’s Warriors went 6-4 in 2010, 7-3 in 2011 and 7-5 this past season, reaching the sectional championship game.
A two-time Times-Union Coach of the Year, Wogomon won this year’s honor after turning the team around midseason.
Following a 53-14 loss at Plymouth on Sept. 21, Wawasee was sitting at 2-4 and the season looked lost.
However, Wawasee went on to win its next five games until falling 24-10 at Concord in the sectional title game.
“We’re going to miss him,” Wiktorowski said. “He’s done a great job and leaves the program in a good place.”
Wogomon will be leaving for another position, and although Wiktorowski wasn’t saying which school he was going to, he commented he understood because of “his ties there.”
“He’s great with the kids,” Wiktorowski said. “He does a tremendous job of walking the line between being a teacher and disciplinarian, but also having the love of the players who want to go out and play for him.”
While Wogomon knows where he’ll be coaching next season, Wiktorowski must now begin a search for his new coach.
“We’ll post the opening as soon as it becomes official,” he said. “We host the (IHSAA boys basketball) sectional here next week, but as soon as that’s over, (the search) will kick into high gear.”
And with a lot of young talent on the team, Wiktorowski doesn’t feel Wogomon is leaving Wawasee in a tough position.
“We’re in a good situation, with great kids on the team and good facilities,” he said. “We need to find someone to keep what Tom has started going.”[[In-content Ad]]
