WINONA LAKE - Although there were no remonstrators, and attorney Rick Helm advised the town council there was no reason to deny the petition, town council members continued a vacation request submitted by Harry Langford, Elaine Langford and Jane Cook without comment or discussion.

The item was scheduled for public hearing at Tuesday's meeting and no members of the public in attendance spoke about the item which would vacate a 28-foot strip of land between the Langford and Cook properties. The adjacent property owners have maintained the area for decades and it has never been used by the public as a beach or boat launch.

At a plan commission meeting, which ended five minutes before the town council meeting began, the item was continued because the commissioners wanted more information.

In other business the council:

• Denied a request by Bill Crane, an organizer for the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society's "Light the Night" event planned for Sept. 20.

Crane asked for a $300 donation from the town July 10 to place a banner advertising the event on Center Street in Warsaw.

Ortega told Crane the council would support the event with manpower.

• Decided to proceed with street work on Peach Tree Lane and in Stonehenge subdivision this year. Peach Tree will be paved and cracks will be sealed in Stonehenge.

Engineer Larry Long advised that multiple bids be advertised for work on Chestnut Avenue because of the extensive sewer line repair, storm drainage installation and street rehabilitation work to be done. Each area, Long said, required a degree of specialty and would best be served by three main contractors.

• Approved housing authority payments in the amount of $2,449 for two complete projects.

• Approved a revised fire department budget, which was reduced from $54,910 to $50,525.

• Town coordinator Craig Allebach said bids for the senior center will be let in a couple of months. Plans are to have the project completed by May.

He also said he would be meeting with Winona Lake Lions Club members at 3 p.m. today.

• Town events were given as: a performance by J.D. Woods in Artisan Court Aug. 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. and two events on Aug. 25: an antique car show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a concert by Rik Lovelady in the Artisan Court from 1 to 4 p.m.

The next town council meeting will be Aug. 28 at 7 a.m. in council chambers at town hall. [[In-content Ad]]
