Winona Police Car Damaged By Tree

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By Staff Report-

WINONA LAKE - Two Winona Lake police officers answered a call and got more than they expected when a tree fell on their squad car.

The officers were talking to a homeowner on South Union Street around noon Friday when a gust of wind blew a tree onto the car.

Officer Mike Albert said the gust blew the tree over and it fell on power lines and the car. The squad car was later towed back to Winona Lake police headquarters.

Albert said the car sustained damage to its back window, quarter panel, roof and trunk. Damage estimates were not available, but Albert said the damage may cost up to $3,500.

"We had just stopped," Albert said, patrolling with new officer Joel Beam. "The gentleman (who called them) said, 'Here she goes!'" as the wind gusted and the tree fell.

Although the two officers were in the car when the tree fell on it, they were not injured, but said the impact blew glass throughout the interior of the car. The car will be out of service until repaired, allowing Winona Lake only two marked police cars. [[In-content Ad]]
