WINONA LAKE - Parking requirements in Winona Lake are being changed for new buildings being built.
The Winona Lake Plan Commission approved new parking construction requirements in the town at its meeting Tuesday night.
The commission approved parking space requirements that will be changed from one for every six visitors to one for every four in the town.
The parking will be for any public building, business, church or auditorium that has seating in the town.
Dick Leaf, town building commissioner, proposed the changes at Tuesday's meeting.
The commission discussed the parking occupancy issue at its Oct. 10 meeting where Leaf said the town needed to plan for more spots for parking because of the increase in vehicular traffic.
The council also approved a recommendation that residential doors must face the front of the home when homes are built in Winona Lake.
The question of if doors should face the front of homes was from a list of priorities in improving the town, presented by Leaf at the commission's Oct. 10 meeting.
The council also approved recommending three vacations of right of ways at 307 Kings Highway, Elder Lane north of Camelot Drive and between 1908 Park Avenue and 2001 Lake Shore Drive.
The vacations will be advertised and letters will be sent to neighbors who are affected by the vacations, according to Clerk-Treasurer Retha Hicks.
The commission will vote on the recommendation at the town council's Nov. 28 meeting after a public hearing is held.
The council denied a request from Garrett Howell, of 1202 S. Buffalo St., to install an off-premise sign on William Drive.
Garrett requested installing a two-sided billboard sign to be used by business owners to advertise their businesses.
Town Coordinator Craig Allebach voted against the billboard on William Drive.
"I do not want to see William Drive turn into a commercial area because it is designed more for a residential area," Allebach said.
Town Council President Rolly Ortega agreed the billboard would not be beneficial for the area.
Commission members include Ortega, Mark Workman, Jeff Carroll, Craig Allebach and Lynette Dick. [[In-content Ad]]
