WINONA LAKE – Winona Lake Town Council approved awarding a reconstruction bid for the Stonehenge Prestwick Subdivision streets project Tuesday.

The council approved a $1.3 million contract with Beer & Slabaugh Inc., Nappanee, for repairing Stonehenge streets.

The streets to be repaired are St. Andrews, Prestwick and Liver Pool.

In Prestwick Subdivision, there are 1.18 miles of street that are 6 inches thick with no aggregate base, according to Larry Long, town engineer.

There is poor drainage with no curbs, gutters or ditches. The pavement failure is due to settling, cracking and excessive slab movement.

The council, at its Aug. 14 meeting, will sign a contract and plans are to begin the project in two weeks, Long said.

The project will not occur this winter, but will resume in the spring. Plans are for the project to be completed by May or June of next year, Long said.

Council President Randy Swanson said the council approving the contract is major headway.

The project dates back to 2006 when the council began discussing the project.

In other business, the council received a 2013 budget calendar report from Kent Adams, clerk-treasurer.

The council will have a budget study session Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. at town hall, a public hearing on the budget Sept. 25 at 7 a.m. and plans to adopt the budget Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. The last possible day for the budget adoption is Nov. 1.

The council also approved Rita Gesaman and Jill Serbousek serving on the Winona Lake Board of Zoning Appeals. Carina Brown will serve on the Winona Lake Publicity Committee.

In other business, Craig Allebach, Winona Lake town coordinator, said Winona Beach Bridge work is near completion.

He said on Aug. 1 work will begin on the Chestnut Street bridge. After its completed, the Park Avenue Bridge work will begin.

The council approved a $42,300 right of way agreement with A & Z Engineering for the greenway project.

The agreement will allow the town to acquire right of way to extend the greenway from Chestnut and Union Streets to the Grace College campus.

Nate Bosch, Kosciusko County Lakes and Streams director, attended the meeting to thank the town for allowing Winona Lake to be used for the Northern Indiana Lakes Festival in June.

Next year’s festival will be June 8 at Center Lake and June 9 at Winona Lake.

Winona Happenings include: Grace College students return Aug. 18; a Remnant Trust public exhibit Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; an Antique Car Festival will be in the Village At Winona Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and a hunter education course will be at the Winona Lake Fire Department Aug. 18 and 19 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
