Winona OKs Sewer Rate, Elects Pres., VP

During its meeting Tuesday night, Winona Lake Town Council approved a sewer rate ordinance that will reduce Winona Lake residents sewer rates from $40 a month to $36 a month.
In other business, the council elected a president and vice president for 2011.
Sue Gooding was elected to serve as president, filling the seat previously held by Terry Howie. Howie will serve as a council liaison to the street department.
Randy Swanson was elected to serve as vice president, filling the seat previously held by Gooding. Gooding will serve as a council liaison to the police department.
The council also approved board appointments for 2011 including Plan Commission, Dave Turner and Craig Allebach; Board of Zoning Appeals, Turner and Dane Miller; Housing Authority, Lisa LeMasters; Economic Development Commission, Turner; Redevelopment Commission, Judy Mugg, Al Disbro and Dennis Daniels; and Tree Commission, Cynthia Illingworth.
The council also approved the town purchasing new accounting software equipment for the clerk treasurer's office.
Winona Lake Fire Chief Mitch Titus informed the council the fire department received a $5,000 donation for the department.
Clerk Treasurer Retha Hicks said the check is currently in the fire department's donation fund.
The council approved the town writing a check for $5,000 to the Winona Lake Fire Department for its discretionary spending fund.
The council also approved the town paying cash for a $253,045 fire truck it approved purchasing last year.
In other business, the council approved mailing out wastewater survey cards every other year to save money.
Councilwoman Joy Lohse asked the council when they would like to continue discussion on the town's strategic plan for vision and growth for the town.
The council will review the strategic plan after the regularly scheduled council meeting in February.
Also during the meeting the council approved a supplemental agreement for the fourth phase of the Lake City Greenway project.
The project is to extend the greenway from Cherry Creek in Winona Lake to Beta Hall at Grace College, according to Craig Allebach, town coordinator.
Allebach said the cost of the project is $1 million. The town will receive a $635,000 grant to pay for the project, and the town will pay $441,000.
Upcoming events in the town include a Martin Luther King Jr. Ceremony Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Rodeheaver Auditorium and Harlem Globetrotters Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Orthopaedic Capital Center at Grace College.[[In-content Ad]]
