Winona Lake Town Council Tuesday approved a memorandum of understanding for an American Disabilities Act universally compliant Limitless Park and Splash Pad.
The memorandum will allow the town to proceed with grant funding and fundraising efforts for the Limitless Park, Town Coordinator Craig Allebach said.
Allebach said the town has received a $1,000 donation from the Northenor Award Kosciusko Leadership Academy project.
The town also received a $4,000 donation from the Dane and Mary Louise Miller Foundation for soil borings that have been completed.
A group of community volunteers including the Winona Lake Limitless Park Committee in collaboration with Winona Lake Park Board and Winona Lake Town Council are working toward renovating the current Winona Lake Park into a universally accessible playground and splash pad called a Limitless Park.
The committee consists of Erin Porter, Mary Pat Wallen, Abby Weiss and Jennifer Orr. It also includes Kelly Hicks, Shelby Beam and Holly Hummitch.
Also serving on the committee are John Boal, Greg Winn and Craig Allebach.
The committee is currently in the process of gathering capital estimates for the project which will be paid for through public, private and federal grants as well as public fundraising, according to Hummitch, who is the Winona Lake Parks Department director.
Thus far, soil borings at the site have been completed to insure proper installation of the future foundation and this has been paid for through private foundation money.
The timeline for completion is dependent on funds raised, however, it is anticipated that at least one stage of the project will be implemented by 2014, Hummitch said.
