He was born April 20, 1925, in Warsaw, to William Sr. and Nellie Garber Petro. On Dec. 21, 1947, in Warsaw, he married Velma N. Barker, who died in 1988.
A lifetime Warsaw resident, he retired as president of Warsaw Foundry. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Warsaw; Purdue Alumni Association, Warsaw Rotary, American Foundry Society, Warsaw Elks Lodge and American Legion Post 49. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran, serving as staff sergeant in the 512th Bomb Squadron. He earned a bachelor's degree in science in 1950, and a metallurgical engineering degree from Purdue University.
Surviving are a daughter, Elaine (and spouse Steve) Glova, Warsaw; three sons: John William (and spouse Amber) Petro, Winona Lake; Paul Charles (and spouse Judy) Petro, Petoskey, Mich.; and Michael D. (and spouse Miechi) Petro, Warsaw; three sisters: Marjorie (and spouse Francis) Mitterling and Marie (and spouse John) Fisher, both of Warsaw, and Margaret (and spouse Jasper) Like, Lake Placid, Fla.; 12 grandchildren: Dana (and spouse Matt) Cadle, Fort Worth, Texas; John Jr., Keaton, Audrey, William and Anne Petro and Keith and Mark Glova, all of Warsaw; Brody Baldridge, Winona Lake; Judd and Noelle Petro, both of Petoskey; and Bryan Glova, Plymouth; and two great-grandchildren, Cale and Case Cadle, both of Fort Worth.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with Pastor David Heim officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with military rites by members of Veterans of Foreign Wars 1126 and American Legion Post 49.
Calling is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with an Elks Lodge memorial at 7:30 p.m.
