He was born March 6, 1924, in Columbus, to William and Bunelle Purtlebaugh. He was married to his first wife of 42 years, Betty Elaine Flinn, who preceded him in death. He then married Marilyn L. Emerick, his wife of 22 years, who survives.
He graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1942, and remained a Bearcat fan his entire life. After graduation, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. One of his duties was to fly fuel from India to China.
He lived in Muncie and worked more than 35 years at City Machine Tool and Die as superintendent of manufacturing, retiring in 1984. After retirement he enjoyed many years in Florida and on Tippecanoe Lake, Leesburg, and lastly in Warsaw. He fondly remembered his days at Greenhills, Delaware and Tippecanoe Lake country clubs.
He is also survived by two sons, Wm. Bruce (and spouse Cheryl), Fort Myers, Fla., and Gerald L. (and spouse Dawn), Harrisburg, Ohio; four stepdaughters: Karol (and spouse Rocky) Clemens, Linda (and spouse Randy) Kirkendall, Kathy (and spouse Clay) Kreicker and Jo Ann Prout, all of Warsaw; three grandchildren: Amy (and spouse Phil) Townsend, Amber Henderson and Nicholas Purtlebaugh; 11 step-grandchildren: G. Robert Horning, Kristopher (and spouse Alycia) and Andy (and spouse Ashley) Hill; Lauren, Kallie and Joe (and spouse Liz) Kirkendall; Keith Kreicker; Ben, Adam and Chris (and spouse Nicole) Sherrill; and Dario Lagorio; five great-grandchildren: MiKayla and MaKenzie Townsend and Jalen, Gabriella and Kiara Henderson; three step-great-grandchildren: Alyna, Aria and Brooklyn Hill; a brother, Robert (and spouse Wilma) Purtlebaugh; two nieces, Pam (and spouse Joe) Gayheart and Jackie (and spouse Lyle) Hawkins; and one nephew, Ronald (and spouse Cathy) Purtlebaugh. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Kathryn Rees.
Private funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elm Ridge Funeral Home. Burial is in Elm Ridge Cemetery.
