ALBANY - William E. Zirkle, 68, of Dunkirk, died May 26, 2008, in his residence.

He was born July 9, 1939, in Hartford City, to Carl and Amber Zirkle. His wife of 47 years, Sandra Zirkle, survives.

He graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1957, and Ball State Teachers College in 1963. He worked at Muncie Chevrolet (New Venture Gear) for 30 years, retiring in 1995. He and his wife owned The Nest Egg, a gift shop in Dunkirk, for 20 years. He was an accomplished cabinet maker and enjoyed restoring old fiddles. After retirement he played the stand-up bass and fiddle with bluegrass and gospel bands around the area. He spent many days fishing in northern Indiana where his family has a cottage at Sawmill Lake, North Webster. He was an active member of Union Chapel Ministries, Avondale Sympathy Club and a former member of Gideons International. He was actively involved in missions work, having traveled to India and, in 2005, to Louisiana where he coordinated disaster relief. After receiving Jesus Christ as his personal friend and savior in 1972, at a Lay Witness Mission, he became actively involved in the program around the state. This lead to his involvement with Aldersgate Renewal Ministries, Nashville, Tenn., where he coordinated and led Life in The Spirit conferences throughout the country.

Also surviving are two sons, William Douglas (and spouse Terese) Zirkle, Hartford City, and Stephen (and spouse Susan) Zirkle, Albany; a daughter, Tammara (and spouse Rob) Neel, Upland; a sister, Janice Adkins (and spouse Maynard Junior) Dunkirk; father-in-law, Wilmer Penrod, Pennville; brothers-in-law, David and Rex Penrod; a sister-in-law, Janet Sue Rines; grandchildren, Sarah, Esther, David, Johnathon, Rebecca, Jordan, Nathan and Natalie; and nieces and nephews, Michelle, Carla, Holly, Jenny, Lisa, Amy, Mark and Brian. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Union Chapel Ministries, Muncie.

Calling is from 4:30 p.m. until the time of service Thursday at the chapel.

Meacham Funeral Service, Albany, is in charge of arrangements.
