He was born Sept. 17, 1941, in Valparaiso, to Robert Carlton and Selema Mildred King Loper. On Jan. 1, 1960, he married Karen Pendley. They later divorced.
He attended Chesterton High School. On Aug. 24, 1985, in Rochester, he married Cynthia Ault, who survives.
A crane operator, he built pipelines for NIPSCO and later worked in the NIPSCO plant at Royal Center. After retiring in 1996 with 37 years of service, he worked at the local County Post store, was a bus driver for Rochester Community Schools and then as a custodian for North Miami Schools. He also drove a bus for Life Care Center.
He dedicated time to Rochester Little and Senior leagues and 4-H Horse and Pony Club with his children and grandchildren. He was a past worshipful master in the F&AM Masonic Lodge No. 70, Rochester, and a member of the Shriner’s Horse Patrol. He also belonged to Eastern Woodland Carvers, Converse.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Rochester.
Also surviving are his children, Ginger Loper (and spouse Bob) Reed and Tariesa Loper Vendola, all of Rochester; Matthew (and spouse Lyn) Loper, Fulton; Kari Loper (and spouse Jim) Felda, Kewanna; Rhonda Wiegand (and spouse Brian) Johnson and Lauren Wiegand (and spouse Dan) Jefferies, all of Rochester; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert Loper, Warsaw, and Richard Loper, Cromwell. He was preceded in death by a grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Rochester, with Dr. Mark Spencer officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Rochester.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Good Family Funeral Home, Rochester, and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
