He was born in November 1921, in Chicago, Ill. In March 1942, he married Mildred Day, who preceded him in death.
His extraordinary sales career began at Lincoln Park Zoo selling peanuts for the elephants to patrons of the park. He served in the Coast Guard during World War II, sailing on destroyer escorts across the North Atlantic. Before moving to Warsaw in 1964, he worked in the Chicago area as a national sales manager for a company in Chicago Heights, Ill. While in Chicago, he was active in the Scouting program and mentored many young boys into becoming Eagle Scouts. Additionally, he was on the board of directors for his church as well as being a 32nd degree Mason. He and his wife founded Indiana Coated Fabrics, Warsaw, in 1967. The company grew into a worldwide producer of coated material under his stewardship. His passion for gardening and riding his tractor earned him the title of “Mr. Greenjeans” throughout the neighborhood. He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club. His retirement years were spent traveling the world. He and Mildred spent most of their days in Vero Beach, Fla. He was president of his condominium board for many years. He was a devoted husband, loving father and doting grandfather and great-grandfather. He gave generously to several charities in Vero Beach and Warsaw, as well as a number of universities.
Surviving are his children: Anne (and spouse Lee) Wall; Sally Haldewang; William J. (and spouse Carol) Haldewang; and Joan (and spouse Jerry) Lichtfuss; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Elizabeth, who died in 1999.
At his request, there will not be any calling or services.
