A 3-2 win leaves the Wildcats at 4-6 on the year and 2-2 in the TRC, while the Manchester Squires are left still searching for a conference win, with an 0-4 TRC mark and an overall record of 1-6.
"Whenever you go into a match, you're looking for a win," Whitko coach Sabrina Spears said. "I haven't really been scouting (Manchester). So, the TRC match (Saturday at Whitko), was honestly the only time I saw them play. The girls came in here very competitive, looking to pull of the 'W'."
Whitko got two of those 'W's at No. 2 singles, where Courtney Carver downed Sadie Preston (6-1, 6-0) and No. 2 doubles, with Crissy Gerard and Adrienne Ferguson defeating Skye Haywood and Rebecca Ruppert, 6-4, 6-3.
"I was proud of my No. 2 doubles for stepping it up and pulling out their win," Spears said. "My No. 2 singles, has also been playing well this year."
At No. 3 singles, Whitko's Nicole Slaymaker won a match that would made any enthusiast of the Atari video game Pong proud.
In a match featuring a whole lot of volleying, Slaymaker outlasted Manchester's Jessica Bedke for a 6-1, 6-2 win.
"Their No. 3 singles player was just amazingly consistent," Manchester coach Tim McLaughlin said of Slaymaker.
With the scorecard changing about once every 15 minutes, Spears was happy to see her girl stick with it, and come out with, essentially, the winning match.
"She is very patient," Spears said. "She can get to about every shot. You can hit it short and you can hit it long, she's just very patient, and she's works amazingly."
Manchester did lose the team match, but still got wins on the No. 1 courts.
On the first court, Manchester's Tara Gnagy found a way to ward off Julie Wilkinson, winning the first set 6-3, then fighting for a 7-6 (7-3) victory in the second.
"Tara has been really consistent all year," McLaughlin said. "She's beaten some real good players, like (Wilkinson), who hits a real clean ball."
The first match to finish up was Manchester's Je-nna Alexander and Shelby Rager getting a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sam Eberly and Ashlyn Miller at No. 1 doubles.
"I like the way they got ahead early in the match, and then were able to finish the match off," McLaughlin.
At the start of the day, McLaughlin had hoped this would be his team's first TRC win of the year, but that didn't end up happening.
"The No. 2 doubles match, even though it was 6-4, 6-3, could have really gone either way," he said. "Our girls were down 4-2 in the second set, but had love-40 with Whitko serving. If they could have gotten to 4-all, with a serve, I think things could have changed.
"There were few points, here and there, that went Whitko's way," he added. "But they deserved it."
