Wildcat Ground Game Smashes Oak Hill

SOUTH WHITLEY - The spirits were high at Ryan Huff field as Whitko ran all over Oak Hill 46-30. The Wildcats had three rushers for over 100 yards each.

Halfback Josh Gonzalez had 158 yards on the ground, while Seth Slater tallied 114, and quarterback Ben Mohr added 112. Oak Hill only managed 94 rushing yards on the game.

After giving up 289 yards to Manchester's David Barrett last week, Whitko defended the corners and stopped Oak Hill from getting more than nine yards on one carry.

"We played the run much better than we have all year," said Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger.

In a game full of controversial calls and rarely seen plays, Whitko seemed to get all the breaks.

"The harder you play, the more chance that you have the breaks going your way," Sprunger said.

And Seth Slater had one of those lucky breaks.

He had an interception he hardly had to work for. As Oak Hill quarterback Kyle Wert attempted to send a pitch back to his halfback, Slater ran right through the line, picking the ball off and running it for 25 yards.

With just under two minutes remaining in the game and Oak Hill down by eight, Whitko was forced to punt. That would have given Oak Hill one final drive to tie the game. But Oak Hill got called for clipping to give the Wildcats a first down.

That is what sparked a five-minute delay and an unsportsmanlike conduct call against Oak Hill coach Dan Brauchler.

When all was said and done, Whitko finally got the job done.

"We've gotten into the red zone six times before tonight and haven't finished it off," Sprunger said.

It was a totally different story Friday.

Whitko got inside the 20-yard line five times and scored on four.

"It is something we have been concentrating on all week," Sprunger said.

Whitko (2-3, 1-2) plays at Northfield (0-5, 0-3) next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
