COLUMBIA CITY - Nothing short of a great rivalry over the years, Warsaw's girls basketball game with Columbia City Tuesday was more like an unwanted meeting with the playground bully.
Warsaw, currently ranked No. 8 in 4A, simply manhandled the host Eagles and Will Wienhorst's 400th career victory was never in doubt as the hot-handed Tigers cruised to a 68-33 win.
In his 25th year of coaching, Wienhorst now owns a career mark of 400-132 (75.2 percent). In his 18th year directing the Tigers he boasts a 296-91 (76.5 percent) record.
"This is my 25th year of coaching, and I've had a lot of great players and a lot of great kids over the years," said Wienhorst, confetti from a locker room celebration still covering his hair and suit jacket. "All the girls I've ever coached have worked and played hard. I've had great girls all the way through."
His team now on a six-game win streak, Wienhorst could pick up his 300th victory coaching Warsaw as early as Dec. 26 when the Tigers play No. 5 Jeffersonville in the semifinal round of the Hall of Fame Classic in New Castle.
Though a back-and-forth matchup over the years, with the Tigers now holding a 21-18 lead in the overall series, and a pair of coaches with 850 career wins now between them, Tuesday's edition of this battle for U.S. 30 bragging rights was a blowout from the get-go.
Warsaw raced out to a 14-1 lead midway through the first quarter and led by 16, 24-8, going in to the second stanza.
Shooting at an 80 percent clip through the first 16 minutes of action, the Tigers went to the locker room with a commanding 40-12 halftime advantage.
Scoring at will, hitting shots inside and outside, the Tigers were 16 of 20 from the field in the first half, while Columbia City hit just 5 of 22 shots in the first 16 minutes of action.
"We played good basketball tonight," said Wienhorst. "We shot the ball well and we moved the ball well. The way we shot in the first half I can't complain, except for the foul shots."
The only part of Warsaw's game that lacked, the Tigers were 5 of 10 from the free throw line in the first half and 7 of 14 for the game.
The game already well in hand, the Tigers came out and started the third quarter by rattling off a 13-0 run that gave them a 55-12 lead when 6-foot senior Jaclyn Leininger hit a three-pointer with 3:25 on the clock.
Columbia City finally broke the ice and scored with 2:35 left in the third quarter when sophomore Angie Roy sparked a 12-0 run that cut the Tiger advantage to 55-24 going in to the fourth quarter.
After topping the 1,000-point mark with a 31-point outburst at Plymouth Saturday, Leininger continued to impress Tuesday at Columbia City, as the Indiana All-Star and Miss Basketball candidate finished with 28 points, nine assists, three rebounds and three steals.
Making her 28-point performance even more impressive is the fact that Leininger shot just two free throws, making them both, and was 11 of 13 from the field and 4 of 5 from three-point range.
Leininger has scored 28, 31 and 28 points in her last three games and for the season is 63 of 110 (57.3 percent) from the field, 15 of 26 (57.7 percent) from three-point range, and 28 of 33 (84.8 percent) from the charity stripe.
With her 1,043 career points, Leininger is now third on the all-time scoring list at Warsaw, trailing Dana Creighton by 80 and Hilary O'Connell by 92.
Leininger passed Tiger great Angie Johnson for third place with a field goal at the 6:35 mark of the first quarter.
"Jaclyn Leininger is the most complete player I've ever had," Wienhorst said. "I've coached great forwards and great guards, she's both of them wrapped in to one. She's a very complete player."
To go with Leininger's 28, 6-1 classmate Michelle DeGeeter scored nine, sophomore Julie Seiss eight, Rebekah Reichard six, Kara Mayer and Holly Durcholz four each, Karen Sand three, and Rachel Braddock, Kim Clay and Laura Heiman two each.
A team shooting 47 percent from the field through seven games, Warsaw burnt the nets in Whitley County Tuesday with a 28-of-46 (60.9 percent) effort from the field.
Columbia City, on the other hand, struggled from start to finish shooting the ball and was 13 of 39 (33.3 percent) from the field.
Marissa Lickey and Roy led the Eagle scoring charge with 12 points each, while 6-3 center Brittany Fisher added four, Sherri Hoppe three and Allissa Ruckman two.
The 35-point win improved Warsaw to 6-1 on the season, while Columbia City fell to 4-5.
The Tigers are in action again Saturday at Northern Lakes Conference rival Wawasee.
