NORTH MANCHESTER -Ê"Well, it wasn't how I thought we'd win," said Whitko tennis coach Larry Schuh of his team's match against the Manchester Squires. "I thought we could take both doubles matches and then maybe snag a singles match.

"As it turned out, we snagged two singles matches and one doubles match. We had a few points go our way, or things could have turned out differently."

The Wildcats picked up the 3-2 win over Manchester Tuesday evening for their second Three Rivers Conference win in as many days.

In the shortest match of the night, Whitko's Emily Crist defeated Manchester's Courtney Ingold 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match.

"Emily Crist played a great match tonight," said Schuh. "She has a strong head on her shoulders, and she is very smart. She just refused to make mistakes out there today."

Then Manchester's Concetta DeFusco tied the match for the Squires. DeFusco defeated Tiffany Hatton 6-1 in the first set at No. 1 singles. However, Hatton fought back to win the second set 7-6 on a 7-5 tie-breaker. DeFusco battled back in the third set to win 6-1, and tie the team score at 1-all.

At the No. 1 singles match, Wildcat Beth Workman downed Bri Foster in a long two-set match. Workman captured the first set 8-6 after winning a tiebreaker 7-6. After a short break, Workman and Foster returned to the court and continued the match. Workman won the second set 6-4, and put Whitko up 2-1 in the team contest.

"Brooke Workman played one of the better matches of her career today," said Schuh. "She was really on her game tonight."

The doubles matches were the longest matches of the night, with both going three sets to determine a winner.

Whitko duo Chelsey Grant and Stephanie Haines faced off against Squires Abbey Keffaber and Casey Thomas in the No. 2 doubles match. While Keffaber and Thomas won the first set 6-2, Grant and Haines won the second set 6-2 and forced a third set. Grant and Haines came out on top 6-3 in the third set to win the deciding point for Whitko.

In the longest match of the night, doubles teams faced off in the No. 1 spot. Whitko's Brandy Bayles and Jen Wendel won the first set of the match 6-4 over Manchester's Aletta Vermuelen and Kessie Karg. But Vermuelen and Karg fought back to win the second set 6-4 and then the third set 6-2.

Whitko hits the courts again Wednesday when the Wildcats travel to Westview, while Manchester hosts Peru on the same night.
