Whitko Tops Wawasee In Wild Season Opener

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

By JEN GIBSON, Times-Union Sports Editor-

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊThe football teams from Whitko and Wawasee enjoyed starting the season so much that they decided to extend the season opener. It took four quarters plus two overtimes for the teams to break a scoreless stalemate and finish with a winner.

In the end, the Wildcats came out on top 8-7 after a 2-point conversion in the second overtime to win their first season opener in three years.

"It's been a while since we started the season with a win," said Whitko coach Bryan Sprunger. "It's been three years since we won the first game of the season."

Wawasee scored the first points of the game on the second play of the second overtime. Brent Doty scampered one yard into the endzone to put the Warriors up 6-0. After Luke Speakman split the uprights, Wawasee held a 7-0 lead.

"Our defense was strong all night," said Wawasee coach Joe Rietveld when asked about the decision to go for the field goal. "I thought we could go for one and the hold them."

But not for long. Whitko took the field on the 10 yard line. Dane Bause gained two yards on the first play from scrimmage, but on the next play Brad Walpole was sacked for a 3-yard loss. Then the Wildcats were slapped with a 5-yard illegal procedure penalty that put them on the 16-yard line. Walpole was injured on the next play, and with fourth-and-16, Kevin Feldman stepped in at the quarterback position for his first snap of the night.

Feldman connected with Brett Lukens for a 16-yard tounchdown pass, making the score 7-6 in Wawasee's favor.

Then Sprunger put Walpole back in the game and sent the troops to the line for a 2-point conversion attempt. Walpole connected with Gabe Langohr for the extra points and the 8-7 Whitko win.

However, the win did not come easily for the Wildcats. Both Whitko and Wawasee had opportunities within the red zone, but neither squad capitalized on them.

In the second quarter, Wawasee had first-and-goal at the 7 yard line, but Whitko's defense held the Warriors scoreless. Then Whitko got to the Wawasee 20-yard line, but time ran out in the first half before the Wildcats could take advantage of their position.

In the third quarter, Wawasee had the ball at Whitko's 21-yard line, but fumbled the ball and Whitko's James DeLaCruz recovered it.

Then in the fourth quarter, Whitko got the ball to Wawasee's 20-yard line but turned it over on downs.

"We played four hard quarters and two overtimes," said Sprunger. "We had a super game defensively. We overemphasized defense in the first two weeks of practice, and it paid off. Offensively, we put them in binds a couple times.

"We made a lot of mistakes, but one mistake we did not make was giving up on downs. We never gave up. We played hard, and that's the main thing. The mistakes are easy to correct if you have that."

Quarterback Brent Doty led the Warriors, completing 10 of 30 passes for 159 yards. Doty also rushed for 70 yards on 16 carries and scored Wawasee's only touchdown of the game.

Alan Robbins led the Wildcats, rushing for 84 yards on 12 carries and catching three passes for 22 yards.

Whitko, 1-0, travels to Columbia City for a 7 p.m. game next week, while Wawasee hosts Fairfield Friday.

NOTES: This was a game that saw several injuries. In the most severe, Wawasee's Rhett Mikel was taken off the field on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance. After the game, Rietveld said the injury was a dislocated elbow. On the same play that Mikel's injury occurred, Whitko's Ryan Jackson was slow to get up and left the field shaken up. ... Whitko's utility guy, Nic Sprunger left the field four plays later with a knee injury. He did not return to the game. ... Still later in the game, Whitko's Dustin Boardman was shaken up on a play. He sat out one play and returned to the field. ... In the fourth quarter, Wawasee's Todd Burns racked up 30 yards in penalties and was ejected from the game after questioning an official.

Warsaw Opens Season By Crushing Columbia City 49-6

By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer

Though it wasn't the Fourth of July, Warsaw's football team put on a display of offensive fireworks in its season opener with Columbia City Friday night.

The host Tigers, coming off a 9-2 season and their second consecutive Northern Lakes Conference championship, used its stable of workhorse running backs and ran away from the Eagles 49-6.

"What you saw tonight was a great team effort," sixth-year Warsaw coach Phil Jensen said. "We've got some weapons. Brad (Seiss) is gonna get his, but this was a great team effort."

Billed as a possible Mr. Football candidate, 6-foot 195 pound senior running back Brad Seiss didn't disappoint.

The talented tailback, who will attend Ball State University on a football scholarship, scored Warsaw's first three touchdowns and ended the evening with 215 yards on 16 carries.

Seiss may have played the lead role, rushing for 160 yards in the first half, but his supporting cast got the job done as well.

In all, the Tiger backfield amassed 321 rushing yards on 37 carries.

If Jensen had questions about his team heading into the season, some of them may have been answered last night.

"The big question was if we would come ready to play," Jensen said. "We came ready to play for four quarters."

As is sometimes true in season openers, the Tigers showed signs of early jitters - they appeared to last all of one play. After throwing an interception on the game's opening play, Warsaw looked like a team of seasoned veterans.

The Tigers lit up the scoreboard - a new one at that - with a four-yard run by Seiss with 3:30 remaining in the opening quarter. With 16 seconds left in the first, Seiss scored Warsaw's second touchdown, this time from 79 yards out.

While Warsaw's offense was piling up the yardage, the Tiger defense kept the Eagles in check.

Columbia City, which finished last season 3-7, totaled just 110 rushing yards on 36 carries for the game.

Derek Kohut led the Columbia City ground game with 85 yards on 19 carries. Geoff Barrell added 20 yards on three carries. No other Eagle rushed for more than nine yards.

Complimenting Seiss were quarterback Ryan DeGeeter, who rushed five times for 40 yards, David Muta (5-21), Ben Kreinbrink (5-21) and Ryan Hamilton (5-20).

"We're beginning to show great signs of building a program," Jensen said. "The kids are doing the right things on and off the field. We made sure we played our juniors that have been with us for three years now. We didn't get everyone in, but the kids understand that if they put their time in their time will come."

Seiss scored the game's third touchdown when he scampered in from seven yards out with 9:09 showing on the second quarter clock. DeGeeter added a 15-yard touchdown trot with 1:15 left to play in the second, giving Warsaw a healthy 28-0 halftime lead.

Down 35-0 after a 15-yard touchdown run from Muta, Columbia City avoided the shutout with a 12-yard scoring strike from Kohut at the 2:37 mark of the third-quarter.

The Tigers padded the lead four minutes into the fourth quarter when sophomore Adam Griggs intercepted an Eagle pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown.

Columbia City quarterback Chad Eckert finished the game 5 of 12 for 37 yards and one interception, while DeGeeter threw 61 yards on 5-of-8 passing with one interception.

The game's final points were scored when Kreinbrink, playing for Seiss who carried the ball just once in the second half, plunged in from one yard out with 9:51 remaining.

In total offense, Warsaw, which has won 18 of its last 22 games, outgained the Eagles 382-178.

The Tigers play next Friday at Homestead, a 41-6 winner over Huntington North.
