Whitko To Hire Coach Monday

Whitko plans to hire its second varsity girls basketball coach in less than a month.

On June 21, Whitko hired 25-year-old Lenny Krebs as its girls varsity basketball coach. Two days later, Krebs called Whitko Athletic Director John Mohr and told him he did not want the job. Krebs never signed a contract with Whitko. He didn't take the Whitko job and sent Mohr looking for a replacement.

Mohr went back to the original list of candidates -Ê"10 to 20 of them," he said. He has one candidate in mind, and he will recommend him or her to the school board at Monday's school board meeting.

Asked if he would bring anyone in for further interviews, Mohr said, "I'm not anticipating that."

Mohr refused to say who he would recommend, saying, "That person could accept another job before the board meeting. You never know what could happen between now and then."

Whitko and Mohr would know. Steve Pickett, who was hired as the boys coach on June 21, had been telling friends and coaches since the first week of June he was Whitko's coach. He had Mohr's blessing, but had not gotten approved by the board, which in most cases is a technicality. Pickett indeed got the job.

Mohr never dreamed he would be hiring a girls basketball coach in July. He thought he'd found his man in Krebs.

"I never picked up on any reservations he had about the job, so it surprised me," Mohr said.

But Krebs originally did not specify what coaching job he wanted at Whitko. At the same time Whitko was looking for a varsity girls coach, the school was looking for the varsity boys coach.

"When Lenny sent the application in, he did not specify if he wanted the boys or girls job," Mohr said. "I called him on that. He shared with me that he would be interested in either one."

But a source said Krebs was more interested in coaching the boys team over the girls team.

Krebs said earlier this week he resigned as Whitko's coach because he was happy teaching in the NorthWood school system, and the NorthWood administration promised him a high school boys basketball coaching job. When he heard this, he decided to stay at NorthWood to become an assistant boys coach rather than go to Whitko and be the varsity girls head coach.

All the while Krebs was talking with Whitko, he was still listening to NorthWood. Because he never signed a contract with Whitko, he told Mohr he would stay at NorthWood.

"He told me perhaps it wasn't the best fit here at Whitko," Mohr said. "We have no hard feelings. I wish Lenny nothing but the best at NorthWood. He'll do well." [[In-content Ad]]
