Whitko Spikers Surge Past Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER - The Whitko Wildcat volleyball team came from behind to beat Manchester Thursday evening.
Manchester won the first game 15-12. Whitko came back to win the second game 15-2 with strong net play by sophomore Shana Miner and good serving by Brigitte Goble.
Manchester held the 5-2 lead in the tiebreaker and extended it to 12-7. Whitko then clawed back to a 13-13 tie, and then the Wildcats sealed the 15-13 win with a Tisha Shepherd kill on an overpass.
For Whitko, Amber Landis had four kills, two aces, eight digs and two blocks; Brigitte Goble had three kills, two aces, five digs and one block; Kayce Moore had three kills, three blocks and one dig; and Tisha Shepherd had three kills, four blocks and two digs.
Greta Miller and Jodie Peden each had three kills for Manchester. Erin Groombridge and Karmen Miller each had three assists. Peden had seven blocks, while Carrie Rodriguez had six digs.
Manchester won the junior varsity match 15-9, 6-15, 16-14. Whitko won the freshman match 15-1, 15-8.
Whitko, 1-0, competes in the Westview Invitational at 9 a.m. on Friday.
Manchester, 0-1, hosts a tourney at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Tippecanoe Valley
Moves To 2-0
At Wabash, the Tippecanoe Valley Viking volleyball team won its second straight match, defeating the Apaches 15-9, 15-12 Thursday.
Deb Burch led Valley with 12 assists. Andria Parker had eight service points, eight kills and two blocks. Emily Cripe had five service points and two aces. Amy Nellans had three kills.
Wabash beat Valley 15-5, 15-11 in the junior varsity match. Valley's junior varsity team is 1-1.
Valley, 2-0, has a 6 p.m. match at Pioneer on Wednesday.
Wawasee Ups Record To 3-0
At Goshen, Wawasee's volleyball team upped its record to 3-0 with a 10-15, 16-14, 15-13 win over Bethany Christian Thursday.
Kara Mathew led Wawasee with 15 assists, four kills and 12 service points. Kendra Damer had five assists and five service points, while Kari Beer had eight kills and six digs. Theresa Lundin had 12 service points and seven digs.
Wawasee competes in the Westview Invitational at 9 a.m on Saturday.
John Glenn Downs Triton
At Bourbon, John Glenn's volleyball team defeated Triton 15-5, 16-14 on Thursday.
Megan Sarber led Triton with three kills, while teammate Teri Hackett was 9-for-9 serving.
"John Glenn played a very good match," Triton coach Gayle Perry said. "They have a solid middle blocker."
Triton's junior varsity team improved to 1-1 with a 15-12, 10-15, 15-4 win over John Glenn.
Triton, 0-2, competes in the Manchester Tournament at 9 a.m. Saturday.
SOCCER
Wawasee 1, Westview 1
At Topeka, the Wawasee soccer team played to a draw with Westview Thursday evening.
After being scoreless at halftime, Wawasee's Niko Ioannou got the scoring under way on a penalty kick at the 14-minute mark of the second half. Westview scored its goal at the 2:20 mark.
Wawasee has a 5 p.m. game at LaVille on Thursday.
No. 11 Elkhart Central 2, Warsaw 0
Warsaw's soccer team lost to Elkhart Central, ranked 11th in the state, at the CCAC on Thursday.
Elkhart's first goal was scored off of a set play, while the second was scored off of a deflection.
"The breaks went their way," Warsaw coach Corey Rose said. "The game could have gone either way since both teams had eight shots. We had strong games from Ben Grubbs and Jon Earhart."
Warsaw defeated Elkhart Central 1-0 in the junior varsity game. Kyle Smith scored the only goal on a penalty kick in the first half of play. Warsaw's junior varsity team is 1-1.
Warsaw, 1-1, has a 7 p.m. game at South Bend Riley on Tuesday.
Girls: Elkhart Central 3, Warsaw 1
At Elkhart, the Warsaw Tiger girls' soccer team lost its first game of the season on Wednesday.
Warsaw goalkeeper Sara Barber had nine saves. Bobbi Wildman scored Warsaw's only goal.
Elkhart Central had 14 shots on goal, while Warsaw had eight.
Warsaw hosts a 5 p.m. game with Culver Community on Thursday.
TENNIS
Mishawaka Marian 4, Warsaw 1
After beating Elkhart Central Wednesday afternoon, Warsaw's tennis team had much more trouble at home against Mishawaka Marian Thursday.
The No. 2 doubles team of Matt Howard and Jason Torrence had Warsaw's only win. They defeated Chuck Fetheroff and Nick Bishop 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
Mishawaka Marian won the junior varsity match 3-2. Winning for Warsaw were Steve Slaughter, who beat Andy Collins 8-1, and the doubles team of Dave Honnefer and Eric Keller. Honnefer and Keller defeated John Jessen and Chris Haizlip 8-3. Warsaw's junior varsity team is 1-1.
Warsaw, 1-1, has a 4:30 p.m. match at Fort Wayne Northrop on Wednesday.

At Knox, the Triton cross country teams opened the season with Thursday losses.
Knox won the girls' race 22-35. Triton's Reghan Kreft placed third, Lissa Bradley fifth, Rachael Yeiter seventh, Liz Miller eighth, Devan Marsh 13th and Sisteen Christian 14th.
Knox won the boys' race 17-42. Triton's Mason McIntyre placed fourth, Matt Savill seventh, Jason Bules eighth, Bryan Bell 11th, Isiah Bowers 12th, Jason Lemler 13th, Shawn Meinert 14th, Ryan Klotz 15th, Wes Rettinger 18th and Justin Vining 19th.

At South Whitley, Whitko's cross country teams opened the 1996 season with losses to Rochester.
Rochester won the girls' race 20-35. Whitko's Susan Dome won the race with a time of 16:30, but Rochester took second through sixth places. Whitko then took seventh through 10th, with Rachel Lehman placing seventh, Jill Metzger placing eighth, Jewel Wise placing ninth and Lisa Menck placing 10th.
Rochester won the boys' race 26-29. Whitko's Mike McKeighen won the race with a time of 18:50. Ben Fingerle placed fifth, Tylen Hull sixth, Micah Moncrief seventh, Scott Ervin 10th and Phil Fetro 14th.
Both Whitko teams host Huntington North and Manchester at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
