PIERCETON - Whitko School Board is one step closer to approving a 2008 budget for the school corporation.

The board held a hearing Monday for proposed budget numbers to be approved at a meeting scheduled for Sept. 17.

The budget proposal for the 2008 general fund is $12,251,580; debt service, $2,648,278; capital projects, $2,055,151; transportation, $858,072; bus replacement, $296,550; special education and preschool, $88,357; and retirement and severance, $95,269.

If approved, the budget proposal will be sent to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance for final approval.

The board also discussed meetings to collect public input on the search for a new superintendent for the school corporation. Former superintendent Dr. Jeff Hendrix resigned in June to take a position as superintendent of Marion Community Schools. Board President Pete Mitchell said he and interim superintendent Bruce Hippensteel will schedule and announce two public meetings. "Everybody come and everybody give some input," said Mitchell.

The board welcomed 20 new school employees to the school corporation Monday. Among the new employees are four new teachers and a new principal. Board member Dave Tranter asked Hippensteel whether the school corporation has filled all its job openings.

"We have several extracurricular positions to be filled and one cafeteria staff and a part-time custodian," Hippensteel said.

Whitko enrollment may be down this year from last year. Classes started Thursday at schools in the district. The official counting day for the school system is Sept. 14. However, based on attendance during the first three days of school, Whitko Middle School Principal Jerry Klausing said, enrollment in Whitko schools is down a total of 27 students. Whitko Middle School is the only school in the system reporting an increase with 30 more students than last year.[[In-content Ad]]
