PIERCETON - Tim Nussbaum of the Bowen Center presented statistics from the student and employee assistance program to Whitko school board members Monday.

Whitko was the first school district to sign up for the program offering students two "free" counseling sessions, and employees, their spouses and their dependents four "free" counseling sessions each over the course of a year.

Costs for counseling is paid with grant funds.

The district has offered the service since 2000 for employees and since 2001 for students.

Since 2001, 442 students have used the Bowen Center's services. An average of 8 percent have continued with sessions.

The students are referred by parents, the court system, physicians or by the school staff.

In 2005, referrals from the courts and physicians increased, and the Bowen Center counseled more boys.

Children ages 14-18 made up the greatest percentage of Bowen Center clients in the program.

The children were helped with adjusting to new situations, depression and attention deficit disorder.

In 2005, 30 percent of the counseling sessions were for bad conduct or "acting out disorders" for elementary school-aged students.

Since 2000, 45 employees/ spouses/ dependents attended sessions.

Very few continued counseling beyond the initial four meetings.

"Going beyond 10 sessions for anything is too much," Nussbaum said.

The Whitko High School renovation project is proceeding according to schedule.

Bids for the project, which will improve every part of the building, will be let in April.

Construction begins this summer, continues through the school year and is expected to end by the start of the 2007-2008 school season.

Dana Wannemacher of Barton Coe Vilama Architects discussed changes made to each section of the school, explaining why the few changes were made.

The main entrance, once switched to the north, will remain where it is, on the east side, with additional security features added.

Every year the state Department of Education selects 12 pieces of artwork from high school students studying art. The work is displayed in the IDOE's reception area.

This year five of the dozen selections came from Whitko students under the direction of teacher Walter Malicki. They are Jenna Yeager, Katie Detwiler, Brianna Bumbaugh, Christie Calhoun and Callista Duggins.

Five students from the 2004-2005 school year will have their artwork framed and hung in the high school art gallery. They are: Kelly Wall, Aaron Wendel, Destinee Hackworth, Sondra Engle and Leah Winger.

Financial Officer Phil Menzie presented financial reports showing the remaining budgeted funds for the general fund - 3.18 percent; capital projects - 9.71 percent; and transportation - 4.76 as of Dec. 31.

Also, as of Dec. 31, 101 percent of the general fund revenues were received, 99.34 percent of the financial institutions tax and 108 percent of the license excise tax for 2005. The totals more than 100 percent will be transferred to special levy account and used later.
