SOUTH WHITLEY - Travel back to the Old West for a musical comedy as Whitko High School performs "Sagebrush."

The show will be presented May 4-5 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $4 for students, and $5 for adults. Directors are Dawn Hinthorn and Susie Trixler.[[In-content Ad]]"We'll have people rolling in the aisles," said Trixler. "We do anyway."

According to Trixler, "Sagebrush" is an Old West melodrama with Black Bart (Quentin C. Jenkins) versus Sheriff Willy White (Charles Plummer). The townspeople are trying to get enough money to get out of Sagebrush and move to San Francisco. Every time the people think they will succeed, they don't. The population of the town started at 600, but is down to 201 thanks to Black Bart's gang.

Set in 1890, Trixler said the show has "all original music from the authors of the play, but it's very funny."

Three of the songs are "Matrimoney," "A Good, Good Woman for a Bad, Bad Man," and "A Love I Never Knew."

The musical is based on a story and characters by Randy J. Clifton, who also wrote the play book. Music and lyrics are by Michael E. Sullivan and Sally Hall Stanford.

Thirty students from Whitko middle and high schools are involved in the production of the musical. Other cast members include Jordan Gregory as Mayor F. Horace Snodgrass; Marjeanna Keplinger as Curley/student director; Zach Sheets, undertaker Simpson Jones, townsperson; Tisha Kyler as Sarah Allgood; Wendy Chalk, Kitty Gordon; Tara Lukens, Dirty Jane; Michael Wobbler, Deputy Bobby Tate; Shana Messmore, Mavis Pringle; Luke Crouse as Luke; Amanda Schultz as Amanda Waverly; Jessica Geiger, Hankie; Kelsey Kreger, Dolly Diamond; Jenna Hall, Missy; and Garrett Webb as Thomas Biggalow. As townspeople are Ashley Rudd as Bertha Jo; Heather Fountain, Betsy Joe; Jenna Kahn, Jenny Joe; Celine Jenkins, Kara Jo; Hanna Hathaway, Joe Joe; Peem Steiner, Emily Jo; Dakota Bradley, Cupa Joe; and Samantha Hartman as Extra Joe.

Choreography is by Hinthorn, Trixler and cast. Piano accompanist is Rachael LePage, with accompaniment by Whitko High School Band, Marvin McNew director. Set design by Trixler, Hinthorn and Cindy Kreger. Set construction by the musical theater class.
