July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
PLYMOUTH -ÊWhitko may have been the visiting team on the scoreboard at the Plymouth Sectional, but the Wildcats made themselves right at home against Culver Academy Tuesday night.
The Whitko squad took the floor in the second game at Plymouth and beat the Eagles 69-42 to advance to Friday's semifinal round against Knox, which defeated Plymouth 60-53 in the sectional opener.
The game began as a battle of three-point plays. Wildcat Derrick Day opened the scoring by hitting three free throws after being fouled behind the arc.
Then Culver Academy's Weston Workman netted a basket from downtown, tying the score at 3-all.
At the 5:07 mark, Day was fouled from behind the arc again. As before, he hit all three charity shots and put Whitko up 6-3.
Eagle Jerome Bennett hit a basket to pull Culver within one, but then Whitko's offense kicked in.
Alex Frantz hit a basket and a free throw, Day hit a three pointer, and then Frantz hit another basket to put Whitko up 14-5. The eight-point outburst gave Whitko a lead it would never relinquish the rest of the game.
By the end of the first frame, Whitko held a 16-9 advantage.
But the Wildcats were not satisfied with a seven-point lead. After Day scored nine point in the first frame, Frantz took over in the second. Frantz scored the first two Whitko baskets of the quarter to make the score 20-11, but Workman hit another three to slice the Wildcat lead to six.
However, Whitko senior Brad Walpole answered with a trey of his own. After yet another Workman three-pointer, Walpole struck gold from behind the arc again.
Frantz followed Walpole's long ball with a basket of his own to give Whitko its biggest lead of the game, 27-17.
At the 1:18 mark, Culver's Chris Schumerth hit a basket to cut Whitko's lead to seven, 29-22, but Whitko scored the last seven points of the game to take a 36-22 lead at the half.
Just as Day and Frantz stepped up in the first and second quarters, Whitko's Jeremy Coble owned the third frame.
Eagle junior Michael Bandy opened the third stanza with a three-point basket at the 7:19 mark.
More than two minutes later, Coble netted a three-point basket and the race was on.
Coble hit 3 of 4 field goals, including two three-pointers, and 2 of 3 free throws as Whitko outscored Culver Academy 14-12 in the third frame to take a 50-34 lead into the final eight minutes of play.
Frantz opened the fourth with a pair of free throws, and Marc Walter followed with a basket to make the score 54-34 in Whitko's favor.
The Wildcats dominated the final quarter of play, outscoring the Eagles 19-8, and finished with the 69-42 win.
"Culver plays good, scrappy ball," said Whitko coach Don Zawlocki. "I think our half-court trap controlled the tempo of the game and we were able to take them out of what they wanted to do."
Whitko saw four scorers finish in double figures as Frantz scored 15, Coble netted 13 and Walter and Day added 11 each.
Workman scored 13 for Culver Academy, while Schumerth added 12 points for the Eagles.
Whitko improves to 14-7 on the season. The Wildcats move on to play Knox at 6 p.m. Friday in the Plymouth Sectional Semifinal.
"Knox is a very talented ball club," said Zawlocki. "They are probably the most talented team in the tournament."
