PIERCETON – The end of one Whitko High School basketball career was recognized Monday night while the other officially began.

On the same night senior Logan Irwin was recognized by the Whitko School Board for his accomplishments on and off the court, the team Irwin starred on for four years finally found a coach.

Scott Wessel, 24, was officially named the head coach of the boys basketball program.

More information on Wessel can be found in today’s sports section.

Jason Ridge also was officially named the assistant principal at Whitko High School.

He previously taught in the Northridge school system where he also served as the head boys basketball coach.

Ridge said Monday night he was ready to transition out of coaching and into administration.

“Leadership is leadership,” said Ridge of moving out of coaching. “I’m ready to make the switch.”

Ridge said he was looking forward to coming to a good school system and eager to start his new role.

April Lehman was given the Friend of Education Award at Monday’s meeting.

Irwin also was recognized by the school board for not only holding almost every Whitko basketball record but for his performance off the court.

Irwin holds a 3.7 grade point average on a 4-point scale and will be attending Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., in the fall on  a basketball scholarship.

He said he plans to major in sports management.

Graduation for Whitko High School will be June 8 at 7:30 p.m.

According to incoming WHS principal David Parker, the school has set up a Twitter account, @WhitkoHS

Parker said it was another way to help communicate to parents and students.

One retirement of note announced Monday night was that of Janet Arnold.

Arnold, the transportation/maintenance secretary for the corporation, is retiring after 40 years.

“She’s a wonderful lady,” said Superintendent Steve Clason. “All of us were choked up when we heard the news.”

The school board approved an agreement with Administrator Assistance LLC to help with an assessment program.

It creates a consortium between Whitko, Bremen, Tippecanoe Valley and Rochester.

It allows for teachers in those corporations to collaborate on criteria for courses where state testing isn’t administered.

The testing is required by the state.

Whitko’s next school board meeting is June 18 at 7:30 p.m. The board meets at the Whitko Administrative Office in Pierceton.
