PIERCETON -ÊFour bids received for the Whitko High School gym reroofing project ranged from approximately $96,000 to a high of $129,000.

The bid accepted by the Whitko School Corp. Board of School Trustees Monday was the lowest bid by C.L. Schust, Fort Wayne, for $96,834.

According to Superintendent Dr. William Worl, C.L. Schust's bid was even lower than the quote they gave the school corporation several months ago.

"The low bid is clearly the best of the four," said Worl.

Approximately half of the cost will be paid by the school corporation's insurance because the damage to the roof was caused by wind. The roof, once repaired, should be good for another 15 to 20 years, school board member Michael Braddock said.

Under the school corporation's maintenance plan, the high school roof - like all the schools' roofs - will be monitored, Worl said. The reroofing will begin soon and the project should be completed by Aug. 19.

"Nothing that will interfere with school," Worl said of the estimated completion date.

In other business, the school board:

• Approved the support staff salaries, non-certified wage scales and administrator contract renewals and salaries as presented. All will receive a 1.5 percent increase, the same increase approved for teachers.

• Approved a resolution to reduce appropriations in the capital projects, debt service and bus replacement funds for the 2002 budget year. Also, in accordance with Public Law 178-2002, the board approved a resolution to transfer the money from those funds to the general fund. According to Worl, the first half of the monies being transferred is approximately $90,000 to make up the shortfall of money from the state.

• Approved the enrollment and attendance of Whitko Community Schools' students in the following area programs for the 2002-03 school year: Huntington Beauty College, Warsaw Area Career Center, Alternative Instructional Methods Schools and NCI Special Education Cooperative.

According to Worl, this is the last year Whitko will be associated with Huntington Beauty College.

• Accepted the resignations, terminations or retirements of: John Mohr, WHS athletic director; Betty Overdeer, Whitko Middle School lead teacher; Mike Hanback, sixth-grade girls' basketball coach, WMS; Rochelle Leininger, WMS girls' track coach; Shelby Smith, freshman girls' basketball coach; Melanie Beltane, academic team sponsor, WHS; Stephanie Moore, ninth grade volleyball coach, WHS; Chad Hormann, sixth-grade football coach, WMS; and Bonnie Pease, Pierceton Elementary School and WMS nurse.

• Approved the firm of J.J.B. Hilliard, W.L. Lyons Inc., Fort Wayne, for financial services, and Karl Sturbaum, Indianapolis, as bond counsel for the bond issue for unfunded retirement liability. The actuarial study for the bonding was completed by McCready and Keene to determine the unfunded liability for retirement and severance.

• Approved a resolution authorizing the adoption of Plan Restatement for the Whitko Community School Corp. Post Retirement 403(b) Plan. The resolution is necessary because of numerous updates in federal legislation regarding retirement plan issues. It makes no changes to the basic intent of the plan, it only changes language as required by the legislation updates.

• Approved the breakfast and lunch prices for the 2002-03 school year. There are no changes from the current pricing.

• Approved for the school corporation to participate in the Northern Indiana Educational Service Center Cooperative Purchasing Program for milk and dairy products, bread and bakery products and cafeteria food and supplies for the 2002-03 school year.

• Approved the receipt of grant monies from Dekko for $1,250 and $302.34 from the Whitley County Community Foundation Inc.

• Granted permission for bids to be advertised for fuel and buses.

• Approved the 2002-03 baccalaureate to be May 29 and the commencement to be May 30, both at 7:30 p.m.

• Noted that the Pierceton Town Council will have a hearing July 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the community building to discuss the adoption of a resolution designating an area north of U.S. 30 as an economic revitalization area. Worl said no school property is involved in the proposed area. "We don't believe it will affect us adversely," he said.

• Recognized Megan Spillers as the WHS prom queen. Spillers, who has Down syndrome, was featured on Channel 15 news and the video of the newscast was shown to the school board.

Board member Hal Trump said he's heard many "neat things" about the story from people outside Whitko. Worl said her story shows the level of acceptance at Whitko for students with disabilities.

• Recognized Philip Camden, a WHS senior, who was awarded the Janet Adams Qubain Engineering Scholarship to Purdue University. According to the school board, the scholarship is a full ride.

• Recognized school board members Deborah Collier and Lawrence Long for their dedication and contributions to the board from 1998 to 2002. Monday was their last meeting. Both were presented with plaques and a reception for them was held after the meeting.

Other board members are Dave Tranter, Michael Braddock and Hal Trump. They meet at 7:30 p.m. in the administration building, Pierceton, on the third Monday of every month. [[In-content Ad]]
