LARWILL – During its short July meeting Monday, Whitko School Board members hired long-time baseball coach Eric Hisner as a Whitko Middle School physical education teacher and Jeff Sprunger, son of Bryan and Vicki Sprunger, both Whitko teachers, to teach social studies at the high school.
Hisner taught physical education at Bunche Montessori Early Childhood Center and Forest Park Elementary in Fort Wayne. Sprunger comes from Tippecanoe Valley High School.
Brandon Bradley will be the boys and girls cross country coach this year. Danielle Dabler was hired as the Whitko High School science teacher, and Susan Slocum as a Pierceton Elementary School second-grade teacher.
Tara Hosier transferred to WMS physical education.
The board approved the resignations of Angela Bontrager as WMS math teacher; Robbie McKerr as WHS social studies teacher; Stephanie Campbell as WMS cheer sponsor; Vini Dawson as WHS science teacher; Don Zawlocki as WHS boys and girls golf coach; Jeanine Corson as WHS business teacher; and Chris McGehee as WHS science teacher, boys and girls varsity and girls junior varsity basketball coach. Julie Green was terminated as a WMS assistant.
Adam Weesner, of Barton Coe Vilamaa, gave an update on the school’s construction schedule. Barton Coe Vilamaa serves the school corporation as architect for and oversees the projects.
“It’s a mad rush to finish,” Weesner said of the new building and excavation of the old building in Pierceton and renovation at the South Whitley elementary school. “But that’s to be expected at this time.”
The crews are preparing the main parking lot at Pierceton, he said, and checking off final items inside the new structure. At the South Whitley school, the final phases of work are being finished.
Board member Roger Boggs asked when the excavation work would be finished and Weesner said it should be done by September.
Board member Jorell Tucker asked about where the dirt was being moved, and Weesner said the huge mound is full of debris, like, concrete, glass and metal bits. Any good dirt would be used by the contractor if it was needed on another site.
Tucker indicated he might know of a place the dirt could be used.
The board approved a lease to the Cardinal Center of Kosciusko County to use a classroom for the company’s Head Start preschool program at Pierceton Elementary School and agreed to provide lunch for the preschool students at the regular student price.
They also approved changes to the handbook to comply with state laws and items like address changes.
The board accepted a donation of $1,316 from Larrod LLC to fund CLASS training for four SWES teachers.
The board approved advertising of the annual financial report. Tucker asked if it wouldn’t go on the state’s Gateway Web site, and financial officer Tom McFarland said this particular document would still be advertised in the newspapers.
The board meets Aug. 3 at 4:30 p.m. to work on board goals and have the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 10, a change from the third Monday of the month.
In addition to Boggs and Tucker, Joe Begley and Eric Trump attended the meeting. Georgia Tenney was absent.
