PIERCETON -ÊFor a second time, the Whitko Community School Corp. held a public meeting for input on the corporation's next superintendent.

And for the second time, the turnout was small - approximately nine patrons attended Monday.

Current superintendent Dr. William Worl is retiring after this school year. Completed applications for the superintendent position are due by March 1, with the school board meeting with a university screening committee March 4. Interviews will be conducted by the board beginning March 10, and the new superintendent will be selected no later than April 28. The superintendent will assume duties July 1.

Board president Hal Trump told the patrons the school board has decided that a teacher, an administrator and a non-certified Whitko staff member will sit in during the superintendent interview process but will be nonvoting members. The teachers' union will select the teacher but the administrator and noncertified staff will be chosen by the school board. The board will make an effort to see that those three positions represent the different geographical areas of the school corporation.

As for representatives of the community, Trump said, the school board believes the school board members are community representatives.

A Whitko teacher, Laura Smiley, said she was glad to see the board including representatives of the school system on the interviewing panel. However, she encouraged the board to at least double those numbers to have more representatives of teachers, administrators and noncertified staff.

When asked how many applications the school board has received, Trump said 13 people asked for applications. However, he also said other school corporations in the state are seeking new superintendents and there are few people available and qualified to fill the position. Included in the final candidates will be current Director of Curriculum Dr. Diana Showalter.

One parent suggested that the new superintendent needs to help prepare students better for college. When his son went to college last year, his son was not as prepared as he needed to be and he was surprised at that because his son did so well in high school.

School board member Dave Tranter said he'd like the new superintendent to continue the strong relationship between the administration and teachers' union.

The regular school board meeting will be Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the administration building, Pierceton. Board members are Hal Trump, E. Marie Trump, Pete Mitchell, Michael Braddock and Dave Tranter. [[In-content Ad]]
