Work on the project is mostly complete. James Elizondo, City Securities Corp., Fort Wayne, told the board the school corporation finished the project about $53,000 over budget. Elizondo said interest earnings from the construction fund were the main factor in the change in cost. At the outset of the project, officials projected the construction fund would earn $450,000 before it was all drawn out for use on the project. Elizondo said the draw schedule accelerated faster than predicted and the fund only made about $320,000.[[In-content Ad]]Whitko School Corp. Director of Finance Phil Menzie said the extra $53,000 is not an emergency for the school corporation. Menzie said the school corporation has not spent all of the money and is not required to do so.
"It's nothing I'm really worried about," said Menzie.
In other news, the board approved the purchase of three school buses and a minibus from Kerlin Bus Sales & Leasing Inc. Kerlin's bid of $70,612 for each 78-passenger school bus was approved over Midwest Transit's bid of $80,917 or $79,430 for buses with a new type of engine, and Cardinal Charter's bid of $83,105. The total cost for the buses and the minibus is $249,562.
The board voted to reject all submitted bids for the purchase of fuel for the 2007-2008 school year. Transportation Director Mike Sands told the board locked-in rates were not offered by any of the bids. He said the school corporation probably will save more money by purchasing fuel on the open market as needed this year.
Interim Superintendent Bruce Hippensteel said Whitko schools attendance dropped by 55 students from last year. The school corporation's official count day was Sept. 14.
The biggest drop was at South Whitley Elementary School where attendance dropped by 31 students. Whitko Middle School was the only school with an attendance increase. Attendance at the middle school increased by 15 students.
Hippensteel told the board Whitko School Corp. attendance has dropped by more than 300 students since the 1993-1994 school year when attendance was at an all-time high.
"In the last 14 years, we've dropped 305 students, or about 22 students per year," Hippensteel said.
In other news, the board approved May 30 as the commencement date for Whitko graduates.
