The Whitko School Board met Monday night as the schools in the corporation are wrapping up this school year and preparing for next year.

Superintendent Steve Clason gave a brief overview of what is taking place for schools during the legislature in Indianapolis.[[In-content Ad]]Clason told the board that the budget for next school year is due by July 1.

Clason noted that one proposed change for schools would be having to pay utilities out of their general funds rather than other funds.

Clason said that this limits what a school can do, especially since faculty is paid out of the general fund.

Whitko Schools could lose teacher if certain budget cuts are made at the state level.

Barb Inhen and George Roth, principals of Pierceton and South Whitley Elementary schools respectively gave updates to the board.

Inhen said summer school at Pierceton will start June 15. She also informed the board that registration forms for the 2009-2010 school year are now available online.

Roth said the South Whitley was recognizing its mentoring program and also recently held some events for its Dynamic Dads program which is used to recognize the role of father's in a child's development.

Parrish Krueger, Whitko High School, and Jerry Klausing, Whitko Middle School, were unable to attend Monday night's meeting as they were involved with student events that took place at the same time.

During the latter part of the meeting, the board approved a measure to keep the lunch prices for the 2009-2010 school year the same as this year.

"In this economic climate we didn't feel it was right to raise prices," said Clason, who noted that if cost increases take place they would be covered in the budget.

Whitko High School graduation will be May 29 at 7:30 p.m. with baccalaureate May 27 at 7 p.m.

There also will be a senior awards night May 26 at 7 p.m.
