The idea becomes reality Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon with a health fair that has something for everyone.
“The sole purpose is to allow students and their families, along with staff members and the public, the opportunity to see and visit with local providers who offer many health care options,” she said.
The event is inside Whitko Middle School with areas set up for everything from tests from Parkview Regional Labs, blood pressure screenings and bone density testing to obstacle and challenge courses for all ages supervised by Whitko athletes.
Emergency medical vehicles will be outside if fair-goers wish to tour them.
“It’s an extraordinary fair and designed for people who have no insurance or a high deductible or who want to submit the results to their insurance,” she said.
Two Whitko graduates, sisters Heidi Krider, a dentist, and Ingrid Goble McClain, an optometrist, also are participating in the fair.
There will be Zumba classes from the Whitley County YMCA; bike and fire safety classes, a registered dietician and certified diabetic educator on hand, too.
With a grant from the Whitley County Community Foundation and the full support of Whitko’s athletic director, Casey Stouffer, St.Clair said families will see there are many activities that don’t cost a lot of money to do or take hours and hours out of the weekly schedule.
Activities are geared to last 15 minutes each and people can move from station to station.
“Hopefully, the event will be educational and people can walk away with information about changes they might want to make and opportunities they didn’t know about before,” she stated.
The Whitley County Board of Health also will offer flu shots for $20 each. People are asked to bring cash for the flu shots and lab testings.
In return, at least 35 prizes will be given away every hour, “So go early and stay late,” St.Clair said.
Some of testings require fasting – no food or drink – for 12 hours. People will be given basic information for insurance payment requests.
Cash payments are expected at the time of service. The normal cost of these tests are more than $600.
